Mobil 1 0w40 versus RL 0w30

It's kinda of "apple and oranges".

Mobil 1 is easier to get a hold of and can be somewhat cheaper.
0w40 is a euro spec. oil, not that it's limited to that.

Redline is best had online and is usually more expensive.
0w30 is targeted at cold climate vehicles that (usually) use either 5w30 or 10w30.

Been debating this one, myself, for my track Miata. Ran Mobil 1 0w-40 for a while, never had any issues. Have Red Line 0w30 in it now. Trying to decide whether to return to the Mobil 1 or stick with Red Line. Don't think there is any real good way to tell the difference, honestly.

RL all the way. BETTER company. They don't market a "FAKE" group III oil as a synthetic. They don't Produce higher Fe "wear" metals in various motors with the SM version.. YET people defended the oil as if it was their own kids. NOW, they state the SN version is better.. YEA RIGHT!

Shrug. I see an awful lot of M1 at the track every weekend. It seems to work well. I see some RL, too, but not nearly as much of it. I suspect this is true from amateurs on up to the pros.

Hi,
robertcope - Yes it was the same at Goodwood (UK) last year across all types of vehicles including bikes.

Shell and Castrol were next in line - mostly Owners were not sponsored, just by their choice based on performance

Considering:

-Most engines will go hundreds of thousands of miles successfully on dino.

-Mobil 1 0W-40 has the best OEM approvals and is used in the highest performance, most demanding engines out there.

-Mobil 1 0W-40 is used in endurance racing.

-XOM has worked with some of the best engine manufacturers over the many years in developing this product.

-RL costs $10/qt, Mobil 1 0W-40 costs $4-5/qt.

I'd say Mobil 1 0W-40.

Where does Mobil 1 0W40 cost 4-5 dollars a quart?

My personal opinion would be Red Line 0W30

I just bought 5qts + Mobil 1 filter for $33 at advanceauto today. Mobil 1 is frequently on sale in the chains like this.

The Application I'm looking at is a 1994 Jaguar XJS with 4.0L AJ6 straight six. It has 92K miles and doesn't consume any oil to speak of. It currently has Red Line 5w30 that I put in in October. It sees a lot of short trips and not a lot of miles a year (approx 5-6K)

I can get the M1 for 6.29 with no tax versus the $11.49 plus shipping for the redline.

Go with the 0w40, it is mobil's top oil, they spend so much in R and D for that specific oil, you just cannot beat its price/performance.

True-er words have never been spoken here...........

Redline 0w30 is considerably thinner for all intents and purposes: HTHS of 3.2 versus 3.8 for Mobil 1 0w40.

Redline 5w30 is basically the same as Mobil 1 0w40 when it comes to operational viscosity.

That's why I went to the RL, hoping to pick up a one or two HP... the Mobil 1 xw30s are all more thin, so I thought it was a good 'in between'.

As dparm pointed out Red Line 0w30 is a true 30wt oil and Mobil 1 0W-40 is a 40wt oil.
Red Line 0w30 will have a similar viscosity to Mobil 1 0W-30, Mobil 1 5w30 and most other syn' 5w30s. Where you'll gain over them is shear resistance and a very much more robust AW package.
