Mobil 1 0w-40 or Pennzoil Ultra 5w-30

I don’t know nuances of the N62/N63 engine, so if HTHS just above 3.5 cP is not ideal, then I retract my M1 ESP 0W-30 and 5W-30 recommendation. I have not tested Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40 X4, but its shear stability results in HPL’s tests impressed me, for a 0W-40 oil. M1 FS 0W-40 lost a lot more viscosity than the X4 oil did.

People seem to miss that I often post results for resistance to oxidation and deposits. The volatility part of the tests are the first part and are less important to me than the later oxidation and deposit phase of testing. In my opinion, where most oils fail us, if they do at all, are leaving harmful deposits.

Yes, for what I have seen ESP 0W40 X4 seems to be better oil. However, X4 is not readily available especially for that price. Let’s take that also into consideration. I mean, HPL NO VII would be excellent choice, but…

Oxidation/deposit results:
M1 FS 0W-40, M1 ESP 0W-30 and 5W-30, Quaker State 5W-40

M1 FS 0W-40 and 5W-40, D1 ESP 5W-40, and Quaker State Ultimate Durability 10W-30. The latter included by mistake instead of QS 5W-40. This test got gnarly, or more specifically, M1 FS 0W-40 did.

We have a member here who has tested various oils, and his test results have been close with NOACK Numbers that are posted for these oil's. I think Jag knows what he is saying because he has done the tests that he has done. I am now using Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 and in his tests show that the previous oil that I was using which was ESP 0W-30 did better in his tests, so be it. I had oil usage with 0W-30 versus 5W-30, what does that say about his test, his results are his results, and I like ESP 5W-30 better. What is interesting is that I am using the new formula of ESP 5W-30 yet on my next OCI I will be using the old formula of ESP.

Amsoil Signature Series 10W-30, and Quaker State Euro 5W-40 have very good NOACK Numbers, as well as a Quacker State 10W-30 that Jag tested, that is no longer available.

Mobil 1 0W-40 in the 24 Hours of Daytona is not relevant to cars driven on the street.

Let's appreciate all of the tests that Jag has done, the only way I would question him is if I did his tests myself.
You also have to consider that Dave from HPL tested M1 FS 0W-40 in his lab and said it was the best performing OTS oil they had ever tested. There's more to an oil's performance than how well it does in a simulated volatility test.

I think you and I discussed this before, concluding it was a prior formulation. It would help to know what performance areas were tested, what other oils were also tested, and how close the results were.
We did, and I asked David about it and the assumption was that it was the SN formula, given the date it was tested, but he stated that there was nothing that would lead him to suspect that the SP formulation would perform any worse.

I don't know what battery of tests they ran on it, but I think we all appreciate Dave's willingness to share that fact with us. IIRC, the Noack for the SN FS was 8.8%?
