Lots of discussion about MMO these days: An oldie, but a goodie! Since it does seem to have a quieting effect on valves, does it afford any protection to non-hardened valve seats in vintage engines? A lead replacer of sorts.

Just a slightly educated guess on my part: Tetraethylead is a fine high temp lubricant. Witness the lubricity of molten lead (electrical solder). Burning Tetraethylead leaves behind small amounts of metallic lead. So for its intended use tetraethylead has no equal in my opinion. Not to mention its antiknock qualities. Of course MMO would have to contribute some improvement in valve seat lubricity over plain unleaded alone. However I believe MMO's lubricity would be diminished at a greater rate VS lead with increasing temperature. In other words I believe petrolium would evaporate/burn off more quickly than lead. MMO's effectiveness would probably be more appearant in a moderate or less performance vintage application. Rickey.

Rickey,

I use MMO very regularly, as my engine runs quieter, idles smoother, and I consistently get better mileage (first 2 are subjective, last one I have hard data on).
If MMO contains tetraethylead, would this show up in a UOA as lead? (please say yes, as this would explain my high lead values in two UOA's). And being an UCL, would it be safe to assume that other UCL's would contain it, too (like Lucas)? I'll continue using it either way, but it sure would be nice to know if it could skew a UOA.

Dave H I have seen no evidence that MMO contains TEL. TEL would disqualify it or other additives for that matter for street use. But I'm no expert. Increased lead in your UOA? Hmmm some cleaning going on? High mileage engine? Or is it leaching lead out of the bearings?

Food for thought. More research needed. Rickey.

Cornbread: I use MMO religiously in all my
vehicles and including outdoor power equipment
boat and a Honda PWC (Personal Water Craft).
MMO is not designed as a lead substitute but
it is an upper cylinder lubricant that also
keeps combustion chamber valves and fuel
injectors lubricated and cleaned. If you have
an old engine that you need to used TEL go
to www.batterystuff.com and you can purchase
TEL from them. (YES the real thing not a substitute)

BTW I had an egine apart one time that I
had used MMO in and you wouldn't believe how
clean the combustion chambers were. Good STuff!!
