2009 Scion xB, 150k low miles but drinks oil at highway speeds.

Idea: Using 50% regular syn 10w40 to reduce consumption with Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 to clean engine.

Since the engine basically drinks oil, I will just top it off with the different oils as needed.

You're likely degrading Valvoline Restore and Protect formulation to, well, restore and protect. Use straight Valvoline to clean that ring pack.
I agree, but that is the drawback I am willing to take as long as consumption is reduced. I guess my question is, can a 40 weight, even if diluted, reduce oil consumption?

My situation is pretty bad at HWY speeds and unfortunately Valvoline Restore and Protect 10w40 is only available in Australia.

Run the Valvoline Restore and Protect by itself for four oil/filter changes, at-least. Don't dilute the Valvoline Restore and Protect with other oils by topping off with something else. If the Valvoline Restore and Protect didn't help after that, overhaul your engine, it probably needs it.

I'll drive it till it blows up TBH. No way I'm overhauling a $5k Toyota. Let's hope Valvoline Restore and Protect in a bottle does wonders!
I assume you have checked the PCV valve? Anyhow, if it turns out an overhaul is the proper fix, and you run it till it dies, don't bother with higher priced oils, find a 0-5-10W-40 on sale somewhere and use that to save a couple bucks. There are also somme goop style additives that will thicken it up some, like Lucas Oil Stabilizer or even STP oil Treatment. Using these things in my opinion would only be after it is determined "you are going to run it until it dies" mode. LOL! Good Luck, I hope the Valvoline Restore and Protect does its magic for you.

What oil are you using now and what is consumption like?
New oil change from original owner and then a few quarts topped up from me. So a frankenmix. I don't have time to change the oil right now and it burns so much that I just keep filling it up. Not good practice but when it warms up I will do it properly.

I hope the Valvoline Restore and Protect does its magic for you.
That's the plan, Valvoline Restore and Protect has a great reputation here and seems to be the only way to get oil control rings loose. I'll be doing a B12 soak and multiple BGR crankcase flushes as well. Afterwards, I'll run Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 for a few months and monitor oil burning.

I meant, are you using and burning 5w20, or have you already switched to 0w / 5w40, and how much are you burning?

Are you burning a quart every 500 miles, or a quart every 1k miles, or a quart every 20 miles?

My thought was to get some idea of how much benefit you'd get from mixing in 40w or if just running 30w Valvoline Restore and Protect would be fine.

Close to a qt every 500 miles.

I think it may be worth running the Valvoline Restore and Protect for several thousands of miles to see if any progress can be made then switch over to 10w-40. I suppose your idea is to keep this mix indefinitely which I don't blame you but it may be better to Separate them for now, Valvoline Restore and Protect first, & then go back to your home brew (this mix) or the full 10w-40 as mentioned. You have options! (y)

How about this instead:
Mix in one quart of Valvoline Advanced 20w-50. That way you are gaining viscosity, with minimal Valvoline Restore and Protect dilution and staying within a brand’s general formulation approach. Seems low risk to me.
