anyone here have experience mixing synthetic oils?

i really like PU but its very expensive to buy by the quart so i usually get it by the jug and i have a bunch of quarts of PP. my truck takes 7qts. would it be ok to add 2qts PP to 5qts PU?

or other synthetics for that matter? any experiences?

Here we go again.........How many times do we need to discuss mixing oils.

Do it....and be done with it. It won't hurt a thing.

Seriously, it will

From what I've read you can mix motor oils, even different brands. The "weaker" base oil and additive package one can dilute the benefits of the stronger one, that's all.

Whimsey

yeah good point. its hard not to get stuck on one oil. and there are so many great oils out there i have not even tried yet.

im still wanting to try M1 HM and edge. i just changed my oil, but i find myself "planning" my next change already. silly huh?

PU and PP should be OK together - same company = same additive packages so you don't get any incompatible chemistry. I wouldn't go mixing, say PU and M1 or something along those lines...you would have to do a UOA and track how the oil blend holds up to know if it was OK.

but PU and PP?

have fun!

PP and PU do not have the same add pack. That's what makes your car run like a Ferrari if you mix them

All motor oils that meet the same API spec are compatible. You could mix Joe's Discount API SM with Pennzoil Ultra API SM and you'd be just fine.

If you need a heavier oil there are better options to HM oils.
It was discussed in the following:

i dont need a heavier oil or a HM, i just like the add pack in M1 HM. it has alot of calcium and boron. good moly too.
its on sale (still!!) at my local orielly's so i think i will pick some up unless i get edge from autozone
