Mixing different weight synthetic with dino

Hi folks. I've read that mixing 1 quart synthetic to 3 quarts dino is a good ratio for a DIY blend. I'm now reading that the weight should be the same.

I mixed 1 qt 10w30 synthetic with 3 quarts 5w30 conventional. Is that going to be a problem?

I see no problem except it is a waste of synthetic oil. You will only get 25% of the additive that was engineered into the synthetic. This also means you will get only 75% of the engineered additive pack in the Dino. So you may very well end with a weaker additive package.This has been discussed several times in the pass. It is important to remember the OIL company engineers do a lot of work and arrive at an additve package, based on data generated from extensive testing. Ed

I'd agree. It's not harmful, there isn't really a reason the weights need to be identical, but I'm also not sure what you are trying to gain by doing this?

Why not just use a synthetic blend like Maxlife?

I've done that. There were times when I couldn't change my own oil. Rather than pay the ridiculous prices for a quick lube syn change, I'd pay for the conventional, top off with premium syn. A syn blend is 70-30 conventional, so its roughly what I ended up with.

What is the object/gain for adding the full synthetic?
It won't be slipperier.

Oil engineers are limited by accountants as much as chemistry.
