My 2007 Camry I4 calls for 4.5 quarts of 0W20 or 5W20 motor oil. I have only been able to find 0W20 under Mobil 1 brand at $6 per quart, so Castrol GTX 5W20 it is for about $1 per quart by the case after rebate.
Now, I have about 5 qts of Pennzoil Platinum 10W30 because I bought it for my previous car but did not anticipate totaling it due to someone else's negligence.
What would the effects be of mixing 0.5 or 1 quart of the Pennzoil Platinum 10W30 in with my Castrol GTX 5W20 oil for a total fill of 4.5 quarts? I would only do this until my Pennzoil Platinum 10W30 supply is exhausted? Or could I just use the Pennzoil Platinum without mixing without negative effects? Would it be better for me to do it in the summer since the temperatures during the day would be in excess of 110 deg F and never drop below 70 deg F at night?
BTW, since it is generally recommended that the factory fill of oil is changed out around 1000-1500 mi, is the same true for the gear oil in the transmission, or would that be unnecessary?
