Mixed Oil Debate

I did A heinous thing my last oil change and used 5 quarts of rgt 5w30 with a quart and a quarter of RGT 0w20.
actually no issue there.
I have 3 quarts of m1 0w40. And 5 of Napa Synn5w20 (sm sodium detergent foemulator) In my leftovers pile.I will not be mixing those. I am,tempted to mix the 0w40 with some Kirkland 5w30. But I probably will just get more m1 0w40. Too different for me to be comfortable.

Cleaning the shelves, now have this in a jug:
0.5 M1 AP 0w20
0.5 M1 AP 5w30
0.5 M1 T/S 0w20
1.5 M1 EP 0w20
My 5.3L holds 8 quarts and uses 0w20 … have PF63E
Thinking this 3 quart cocktail with a jug of M1 AP 0w20
Maybe a 6k OCI … what say you ?

Is this a serious post? This subject has been beaten to death on here and I'm sure you know how to use the search feature. 🎣

Short answer: you end up with a mix that doesn't carry any of the approvals each of the constituents were approved against and, depending on the ratio, could be a 5w-20, 5w-30, 5w-40 or even slip a winter rating and end up a 10w-30 or 10w-40 depending on the base oil blend of the products being mixed.

First of all Mobile1 5 quart jugs have 5.25 quarts in them - I don't like over filling the crankcase - so I measure.

The Tahoe takes 6 quarts of 5W30 - Wife's SUV needs 4.5 quarts of 0W20

So I have been using a full 5 quart jug of M1 5W30 (that is 5.25 quarts) with the .75 quarts left over M1 0W20 from the SUV.

I have never lost one second of sleep over it --

In my OCD world having things come out even and not having a 5 quart jug of M1 5W30 with 4.25 quarts in it and a 5 quart jug of M1 0W20 with .75 quarts left in it and my world is a happy place.

A while back I hit a clearance sale of SuperTec 5W30 full synthetic in the 12 quart jug - I still have 10 quarts left -

I just bought a new pressure washer - and was having a hard time deciding what oil to use after break in - it caused me to also reevaluate my oil choice for my generators.

The pressure washer manual says 10W30 or Kohler Pro 10W50 - this engine is going to be running flat out its whole life - but I am not paying Kohler $18 a quart for their magic oil - the 5W30 I have seems a little light - and Kohler says only use it in below freezing temps.

I impulse bought a 2 gallon jug of SuperTec 15W40 conventional oil - $20.49 / $2.56 a quart seemed like a deal - and at the time figured I would mix some SuperTec 5W30 full synthetic in and up with a 10W35 or 12W38 - or at least something in between.

After reading all about the "dangers" of mixing I may just use the 15W40 straight from the jug - seems like a better choice than 5W30 synthetic - mainly because I will be using the pressure washer mostly when it is around 90 degrees or hotter.

But since I have gone this far down the road --- viscosity info --

15W40 SuperTec conventional is 14.98 / 100 degrees - 112.87 / 40 degrees
5W30 SuperTec full synthetic is (near as I can tell) 10.9 / 100 degree - 62.8 /40 degree

Using the mix calculator -

5W30/15W40

50/50 gives me 12.75 @ 100 degrees and 83.6 @ 40 degrees
40/60 13.2 A@ 100 - 88.7 @ 40
30/70 13.6 @ 100 94.1 @ 40
20/80 14.0 @ 100 100@ 40

I don't care much about below freezing because it will never ne used in anything close to cold weather.

Delvac 15W40 is listed at 14.2 @ 100 - 106 @ 40

Rotella and Delo 15W40 are about the same

Rotella and Delo 10W30 come out right about 12 @ 100 and 80 @ 40

Any input - even if it just to mock my intelligence would be appreciated and welcome.

I mix oil all the time, but not PCMOs with HDEOs or multi-grades with multi-grades. . For example, I just bought 32 litres of Petro-Can Duron 5w30 UHP that I intend to blend with
their SAE 40 which I have 26 litres of. Both are of the same chemestry, close enough with P1200, the CK-4 limit. 50/50 will yeild a 15w40 or so
with an HTHS of around 3.8.

The pail of 15w40 ST I bought last week was filled in Canada and does not have the Wpp logo, Warren Petroleum Products on the bottom of the pail.

I wonder where do these ideas come from.
I just looked on my porch and i have too many jugs with 1 qt or 1 pint left in them. Most are 5W20 or 0W20.
with similar DP.
The cars are under warranty, this mix may go in the snowblower next OC. I may consolidate them into one jug.
Dang! Snow blower only take 24 oz! I'm doomed to oil leftovers!
And I haven't pulled the mower out this year at all.

Anyone run a 20 grade in a "ChHonda" OHV Snow blower engine in a moderate climate?

What is M1 T/S ?
That's easy - mix it and use it. No issues there - other than running a 20 in a V8 truck :)

I wouldn't think twice about using that mixture, all M1 = no problem!

T/S = Truck and SUV 👍🏻
Just because "Rotella"
Marketing or is it really a more viscous 20 grade?
Now we are splitting 20 grades. Nuts
Use to be Asian and VAG "manufacturer labeled" 0W20 was on the thin end and
the stuff from the big oil co's at Walmart was a bit thicker. Ford 5W20 thicker still
Isn't RGT gone from the lineup?

Thanks, Ken

Yes … Truck and SUV … 30% Grp4 etc … Think it has a bit more add pack … Regardless - $15/jug yellow tag 😷
I‘m going to use 0W20 until my powertrain warranty is up in less than a year … and have planned my stash consumption that way too … (have M1 AP, RGT, and VME in 20/30 both) …

I had so many partial bottles of oil I almost just dumped them in with my used oil just to get rid of them.

Some of them were old enough to vote since the vehicle they were for had been traded off years before - I eventually used them up - topping off something that was a little low on oil, in the lawn mower and to lube the chain saw bar.

I was down to only 2 oils on the shelf - M1 5W30 and M1 0W20 and I felt pretty good about it -

Wife's SUV takes 0W20 and the plan was to use M1 5W30 in everything else - Tahoe, lawn mowers, generators and pressure washer.

Then I went OCD - one generator calls for 10W40 and I was going to be used on a 95 degree day so I grabbed a jug of 5W40 Chevron DELO -

Walmart had a clearance of 5W30 SuperTec in the 12 quart box - couldn't pass it up M1 5W30 was $50 a 12 quart box and ST was $26.

Then the pressure washer (I just bought it) rejects 5W30 unless it is below freezing and the oil of choice is 10W50 - so I picked up a jug of 15W40 Chevron DELO synthetic blend and for some reason a 2 gallon jug of 15W40 SuperTec heavy duty diesel oil (rated API CK-4/SN for gas engines)

Just like that I am now back to 6 different oils and a cupboard full.

WTH - last two times I was in Walmart the oil inventory was pretty thin - shelves were bare - they were even limiting online orders. So I figure I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not be able to buy it.

Thanks, A2jz, I got that now.

I was saying because Shell marketed a "vehicle specfic" oil in RGT that EXxon Mobil joined the club
Then I was wondering if it was all marketing or " label engineering" with similar contents.

Maybe they did bump up the HTHS and some EP adds, IDK.
Now I am curios to look at the datasheet VS. M1 EP
