Not the best strategy for the longevity of your fuel pump, as they use fuel for cooling.

Never lost a fuel pump in my whole driving life.

Pumps are cooled by the fuel flowing inside them. Simply getting low means nothing. Only if they go bone dry would it matter.

Even then maybe not. My wife ran a GM 3.6 out of gas twice. Got 200K miles out of it. No issues.
