I have a 91 Nissan 300zxTT (54K miles). My previous oil used was Amsoil AMO 10W40. I do not drive car to often, but I do track gas mileage at every fill-ups. I have been averaging around 19 mpg. I changed to Royal Purple HPS 10w40. I have tracked the mpg at the last 3 fill-ups and I have gotten a consistent 22mpg. I have not noticed any known mechanical or electrical problems with car. Driving habits are the same. I have been using the same type and grade of fuel. I always fill-up at the half way mark. No work has been done to the car.

Could the change in oil have this effect on gas mileage?

Some oils will have an impact on gas mileage. Many times I have seen a differance if I switch the f150 from dion to synthetic. Never noticed it switching from synthetic to another synthetic, but it could be different for you

Correct!

Also your right foot and brain will do more for MPG than anything else.

A10,

I feel since your using a 10W-40 synthetic oil your MPG should be slightly better alreat despite the brand. Most if not all of your improvements are due to how you hit the gas pedal including doing all the right things like tune-up wash and wax your Z and most of all checking the tire pressure.

Every year my buddy and I head for a vaca in Arizona and doing all the right things I can get 21-23MPG easy in my 01' Durango 4.7/V-8.

How about trying a 5w30 synthetic instead of the 10w30????

Exactly. My car has a real time display of gas mileage and most people would be very surprised to see how much it varies based on your foot.

Yeah but what fun is it poking around like a 87 year old great-grandmother??? Last "fuel mileage" vehicle I bought was in the '80s...

I am a RP fan as some of you have no doubt come to realize

Their HPS is good oil, entirely Group4 base, high ZDDP, and performs great in my boosted Bimmer as well as my two N/A Bimmers. I can honestly say that I get an extra 40-60 miles out of a tank on a fresh oil change, and that lasts for about 5-6k miles (with BMW Syn I would average 420 miles before the empty light, with RP it is 450-460). It could be due to the oil having cleaned a ton of sludge and varnish out, but other than that, I have used the same FI cleaners (RL SI-1 and Techron Concentrate as often as every 500 miles), always keep air filter (aFe ProDryS filter on their CAI) clean, keep MAF clean, do regular TB cleaning, etc. Also, that mileage is 90% highway at 70-80mph.
Your results may vary.
