Microguard 51394 Dissected

Not extremely impressed with this filter sadly; although when put in perspective that the use of this filter was in a 1992 Toyota Corolla in excess of 12,000 miles it's not all that bad. Canister was extremely sturdy, although pleats are very wavy and not uniform there is no tearing present. The ADV while functional was definitely very stiff and not too pliable, probably from all the hot and cold cycles it was put through during the high FCI.

Stood up well to a 12,000 mile OCI.

I'd spend a couple extra bucks for the Wix next time and use a top notch synthetic oil like Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

I definitely agree a Wix/Napa Gold would be better suited for an extended oil filter change interval than the Microguard used. The Napa Gold for the Honda Accord is from my vehicle, otherwise all the other filters are from family and friends that I've collected in order to share and see varying filters in a variety of cars. Wix made filter sold at O'Reilly. I bought a MGL51085 for a Grand Caravan. I was concerned that it was not apparent that it had a relief valve even though the packaging said it did. The pictures here suggest it has a combo valve that you cannot see looking through the hole. I hope this filter can handle a 5k mile run.

Appears the same as a Napa Silver to me. Napa advertises those for 3-4k OCI's so I'd think this one was pushed well beyond intended. Took a beating but held together which is the important part.

not really sure who makes that filter but the wavvvvy media is usually associated with tearolater.

Looks to be an ADBV/Bypass combo valve. Guess that answers the question if it's silicone or not ... answerer is not.

+1 This filter tier-wise, is the equivalent of an orange can which is rated to 5k. So imo, this one was run well beyond what would/should normally be expected and bottom line, it held up and did it's job. Wondering what the time frame was for the oci/fci?

That said, one the reasons I don't prefer a nitrile combo valve is for the reason noted. It seemed stiff, not pliable. When just an adbv, all that may mean is some start up rattle which won't seriously hurt an engine. However when that nitrile combo valve stiffness also controls the bypass psi, that's another matter. But perhaps at ~5-6k oci/fci this may have been just fine. Just a reason why I prefer Wix metal coil spring thread end bypass, which some MGL's actually use.

As noted at 12k miles, the Napa Gold/Wix would a more appropriate choice.

Never seen one of these with a silicone combo valve and I'm not expecting to either.

Wix's nitrile ADBV's seem to be quite stiff even at shorter OCI's from what I have cut. They hold oil very well though, I get as good or better frigid cold starts with them than just about anything.

I agree 12k is a bit much, but I wouldnt expect these wavy pleats either. As you know, might want to upgrade.

This extra long MG cartridge was posted with 9k and seemed to hold up quite well.

This is WIX made.


The engine this filter was on might have exposed the filter to lots of moisture in the oil for some reason (coolant leak, repeated short trips, etc).
