MicroGard Select MSL10255 PG-made center tube contamination

Can't blame storage rot. I wonder how many filters come with crud inside like this, but most of us never check (I don't)? Ignorance is bliss?
Probably dang near everyone. I have bought several different brand filter over the years and for whatever reason I wipe the base of the filter where it meets the engine with a shop rag before installing as a habit. I have seen a greasy grey residue on a lot of them. I just assume it is oil from the machining process which probably keeps them from rusting in shipping and storage. Probably a little
metal material in there as well. I have had engines go 300k or more, so I think there are a lot of other things in life to worry about.

Interesting as Microguard Select is one of my very few go-to brands. All of the MS I've bought from O'Reillys are Vietnam COO though, so I wonder if this changed or... That said, I am leaning towards defects or knock-off which is my default for almost anything available at a discount from eBay, with Amazon 3rd party sellers not far behind.

This is not the baseplate. This is the center tube, inside of the filter that backs up to the media. It would be difficult to clean that up.

Additionally, a metallic greasy residue. Sure. Still not my cup of tea but I could understand from machining.

But when you see visible metal pieces within that wipe, I do not know how a few of you now are saying that is of no concern. This is what goes through an oil passage that’ll make a visible mark on a main or rod bearing.

They could be filters from a certain lot that O'Reilley "sent" back to Premium Guard. Seems as though these are "seconds" that somehow end up on the secondary market like ebay.

It seems this has happened in the past.

Where were the topic Mictogards made? The China- or Vietnam-made PG filters certainly don't seem to have QC issues (other than sloppy glue in some models). Maybe PF started outsourcing them to US factories where quality is NOT job 1!
:)

As much as some people think "Lost Freight" is a scene out the "The Soprano's" of tractor trailer truck being heisted on the side of back road in NJ, 99% of the time it is stuff left at the ports by the seavan container load left unclaimed for various reason and not picked up. That happens more than you would think. That stuff is then auction for pennies on the dollar and then resold a few more times before it trickles down to the resellers we see online. Same thing repeats anywhere along the transport chain to include railroad and trucking yards

None of the end selling retail customers ever had this stuff on their books because it never got to their distribution warehousing to begin with. That is reconciled with the importers and their insurance.

People can contact O'Reilly's or whomever, but I doubt it will get traction once they understand it was bought outside their retail establishments to begin with.
If it’s lost freight, someone found it and didn’t return it, which means stolen. Containers have paper work. OReillys didn't lose their oil filters, or forget to claim them. A private person might not claim their container for different reasons, like dying, and the contents auctioned after a time period elapses. I wouldn’t believe OReillys doesn’t have a phone number to call to tell them they have a container from Vietnam waiting to be picked up.

I bet you they outsourced some to M/H . It was looking at us right in the face all along .

The only way to ensure you don't get any oil filter without some kind of manufacturing defect it to not ever use an oil filter on your engine anymore ... Just block off the filter mount, lol. This is why it's important to inspect every filter you are going to install.

Lost/Unclaimed freight is a thing, that is actually how Harbor Freight Tools got their start. Just because it happens does not make it "stolen".

The oil filter market is a dangerous place to buy nowadays. So many filters with defects.

done deal, cut at base plate, remove element, and weld 'er back up. drain and fill every 500 miles or until dipstick represents hobby glitter

***this of course is satire

I think what I wrote was correct. Do you think Oreillys leaves a container of oil filters unclaimed? Private small shippers may forfeit their containers. I already said this.
Of course more likely someone steals boxes of oil filters from a container when it is open. Then they fence them and it gets on ebay. You can be sure Oreillys isn’t losing oil filters, they are stolen during shipping.
I used to watch storage wars all the time. These are forfeited goods and a legal process was gone through to take possession to sell them.

We can internet sword fight this to death but no one is going to write on either of our tombstones of who won nor will our moms put a gold star sticker on the refrigerator for a job well done next to our names.

Your free to think however you want. I am just pointing out that it does happen. Your default absence of known fact is that it must be criminal of any secondary source sold of these items. I disagree and anybody else reading can draw their own conclusions and I am fine with however they decide.

Quick update, never received a reply from PG. Radio silence. I was refunded in full and the seller did not want them back.

The entire case is up for grabs for free if local or shipped on your dime. I never inspected every one of them, maybe some are fine? Can always cut 'em all open for fun!
