Metal shards from stripped oil drain plug.

I recently purchased a 1985 Ford LTD Country Squire. It has two oil drain plugs. Both were aftermarket when I got it. Both the correct size.

One of the plugs showed lots of resistance when unscrewing. When I screw it back in, it did the same, didn't want to screw in easily. Snugged it down, and it was dripping oil. I went to tighten more and it just started spinning. Great.

It also didn't want to come off, would just spin, but not move out. I was finally able to get it off by using a flat-head screwdriver to push it hard to one side, and at the same time use the socket to back it out. It essence what it seemed to do was 'bit' into the metal again and dig its way out.

There were lots of metal shards, some pretty good size. I used a telescopic magnet to try and get metal out from inside the pan. I got a decent amount, but, I probably missed some. I also flushed about a quart of oil through. But, this drain plug isn't vertical to the ground, it's horizontal up a half inch or so. So, flushing effect was limited.

I then screwed in a nice plug with a better, more crushable gasket (green Dorman one, they deform well). The new plug went in with lots of resistance. So, I imagine it may have created new metal shards (no way to avoid that). So far, no leaks.

Should I worry about any potential metal flakes inside the pan? Some might be stripped screw/bolt type pieces and can be pretty decent size (1/3 inch crescents).

Or, am I ok?

Thanks

The metal chunks/shards will go through oil pump first. Least problem will be scratching/gouging oil pump gears and walls. Worst problem will be locking up oil pump.

Sounds like a good candidate for a new oil pan. It would give you an opportunity to flush out any metal shards. I'm usually not one for such large undertakings, however, and I'd probably leave it be with fingers crossed.

unfortunatly he cant change the pan with the engine in the car. Id put a magnetic plug in it and let it catch the metal

actully these old fords were known for pieces of valve stem seal locking up the oil pump them they candy cane the oil pump driveshaft

Yah, that happened to my sister Gr Marquis. My BIL prayed and R+Red the oil pump. When it didn't rap, he replaced the valve seals.

Sweet car. Fake wood trim? Growing up, the neighbors owned one. Pretty sure it was lime green with the wood trim. Floated down the road like a cloud...

As to the drain plug, I'd put a really strong magnet on the pan and not worry too much about it.

Yep, lol. Trim and all.

You guys saying magnets...do you mean put a magnet in the pan? As in take off the bolt and shove one in?

a strong magnet on the OUTSIDE of the pan.. it should theoretically hold the shards to the inside so they can't circulate much.. I would also do a magnetized oil drain plug (I know you don't want to hear that at this point) lol

Thanks.

I have some concern that if I remove the forward oil drain plug I may have trouble getting another to stay in. It's locked in good now, but I don't know how much life the threads have left.

I could put one on the second hole. Maybe any shards can migrate over there.

Does anyone have links to good external magnets or plugs? (Measurement: 1/2-20, Head Size 7/8 In.)

Thanks.

Is the oil pump strong enough to suck metal flakes off the bottom of the pan and through the screen?
