Oil drain plug problem

the type of plug/gasket the OP describes is exactly what my neon had. (2L 4cyl)
I Replaced the whole thing on My second or third Oil change (4th since i bought it)as the Techs where i had previously had it changed, put it on Gorilla tight, and i had rounded off the corners before I got it broke loose.
(And I had used the wrong socket, it took a 13mm, I used the roughly equivalent SAE size...)

I solve the problem by finding the thread pitch of the drain plug, the find a plug that has a copper gasket that goes between the head of the bolt and the oil pan. The head of the replacement bolt sometimes had a different diameter than OEM, but it always sealed correctly.
This works for most drain plugs that GM and Chrysler use.

No, don't use a regular o-ring for this application. Tightening the bolt will just flatten the o-ring and force it out from under the bolt head.
O-rings for engine oil are a specific material, the ones from a hardware store are probably not engine oil resistant anyway.

Get a tredo washer, most places that has hydraulics have em.

I lost my original drain plug on my GC when I installed a Fumoto valve. I later removed the Fumoto. Subsequent drain plugs have not held up. Now that I am back to doing my own oil changes, I re-installed the Fumoto valve.
How about a water hose washer? Those should work, I would suspect and are easy to come by.
