Does the '97 have a belt or chain? If chain, does it need to be replaced periodically?

Chain. Usually last life of engine.
You can look it up on the Gates website. They will also tell you if an interference engine.
Chain. Lifetime service.
What engine? I thought the duratec had a belt in some years though am not 100% sure
Chain, no service interval unless it takes a dump.
Also with Ford, for the most part, chain=interference, belt=non interference. There can be exceptions though.

My niece's 2006 Fusion has the Duratec 3.0 and it has a chain. You can see it when you remove the 710 cap...

Wasn't the 2.0 Zetec an interference engine? It had a belt, not a chain. IIRC, I thought it was valve-to-valve and valve-to-piston interference, but it's been awhile since I've had a car with that motor so I could be wrong.
