Mercon V vs. Mercon LV question

I noticed today that the 2005-2007 Focus is spec'd for Mercon V fluid (automatic transaxle), while the 2008-2011 Focus with the SAME automatic transaxle is spec'd for Mercon LV. The two fluids are not interchangeable. Am I missing something, or could either fluid be safely run in either transmission? Did Ford change something in the transmission that isn't readily noticeable?

I have the same question about using maxlife (bottle says mercon lv) for a 09 taurus which needs mercon v.
