I have a 04 ford escape 65000miles, and dipstick and manual call for dexIII/mercon fluid wich is what I am using for drain and fill now with no problems.
I was wondering if the mercon V is an upgrade since I saw a ford video recently that said the merconV was backward compatible with mercon, if so it seems strange that my 2001 taurus specs mercon V,why would they not spec mercon V in an even newer vehichle

I think it's because you have a cd4e trans. Initially Ford did not spec Mercon V for that trans. As far as I understand, new Mercon V has been reformulated and is now fine for these transmissions. I have a cd4e in my Mercury Cougar, and I run Mercon V in it.

I just checked motorcraft site and the merconV can be used in trans previously spec'd mercon, now I just wonder if I should stick with the mercon or use the merconV from now on for drain and fill(4 qaurts) or do a complete change to the mercon V.

is the merconV that much better or not.

I will probably just stick with what I have been doing, drain&fill every 15000 unless I find out otherwise.

Mercon V is more shear stable, does not oxidize as quickly, and pumps better in cold weather. Use the Mercon V. Might add, if you have Mercon in there now are doing drain and fills, the Mercon V will mix just fine.
