I am flushing my 2001 Excursion's 4R100 trans. Owners manuel says Mercon, do not use Mercon V. Motorcraft doesn't sell Mercon. Ford says to use V.now. Are these fluids compatible? Should I stick with Mercon which is available? What about Kendall Versatran?

The GF's Ford from that era specs Mercon, has done real well on Maxlife Dex/Mercon. Could babble on about how great, but it just works. If you need 12 qts or so for your flush Amazon has cases of quarts available. They also carry the Valvoline regular Dex/Mercon in cases of quarts which are a bit cheaper than the Maxlife version.
Mercon V is backward compatible.
Mercon V works excellent in my two 4R100's.
Mercon V is backwards compatible, as the above gentleman stated. If you still would rather use the old stuff, Castrol still makes Dex/Merc (a substance that works for both) in the black bottles..
But for Ford use, the Mercon V is what is used in your car if you would bring it to the dealer.

At that time [up to 2005 or so], that was the official position.
But is has changed! Now, mercon V is acceptable!

Just bought my son for his 6 yrs of college a 08 Ford FX4 with the 5.4L 3v and 4R75W Transmission... Which calls for Mercon V... No local stores stock the Mercon V in gallons... But they do stock Valvoline Maxlife Merc/Dex by the Gallon @ $16 a gallon...
I feel the Maxlife will serve the 4R75W really well... I plan on doing a flush in 2 weeks and add a magnefine filter as well... The FX4 will do very little towing if any, and see mostly highway miles...
What are your thoughts... I just can't see buying 16qts of Mercon V @ $6 a bottle...

That transmission was designed to use Mercon V, and Mercon V was introduced to resolve shuddering with the predecessor 4R70W. I wouldn't use an older spec of fluid just to save a few bucks, especially on a nice newer truck.

Think about more expensive Mercon V at $6/qt this way: It cost $2/qt more than Valvoline Maxlife Merc/Dex, the extra $32 for 16 quarts spread out over 5 years is about $6 a year. Lunch at McD is about that much now.

is all mercon V created equal ? I mean any change on recently formular or it been the same since it first made . Because my mustang 5 speed, spec for mercon atf, then i put on mercon V and it shift poorly, switch back to dex/mer and it shift fine again.

Mercon V is made to replace Mercon, but if you want to go a step further, you could buy ceetain types of Amsoil or Redline fluids that are made for Mercon and Mercon V transmissions.
