I have a 2006 F-150 4X4, and recently did a search to find out what should be used in the transfer case. I don't have an owner's manual. Found a website that showed either Mercon LV or XL-12. I went with Mercon LV about 200 miles ago.Now I am reading that Mercon LV should only be used in TCs mated to a Mercon LV trans. Mine calls for Mercon V. I thought about draining the TC and filling with XL-12, but I have read that XL-12 has been discontinued. I am at a loss as to what to do..If XL-12 is discontinued, it sounds like I'm stuck with Mercon LV. Any thoughts on how I should proceed? Thanks in advance.

Mine has redline D4 in it. So did my 2009. I think LV is fine for any of them. If you have the one with 4A switch (lariat and up), don't put mercon V in it. While somewhat unsubstantiated, it seems to damage the auto clutches over time and cause failure. Any transfer case without the 4A setting is fine with almost any ATF.

When did this happen? Last year when I did my 100k service XL-12 was still recommended for the transfer case... although I went with the Amsoil ATF.

Maybe within the last 6-9 months. We sold out of our XL-12 and had to keep correcting our system whenever I tried to sell Mercon LV it wanted to bill out XL-12.
