For the first time waxing a car would you recommend Meguiar's Ultimate Liquid or Paste wax? Which would give me the best possibility for a successful wax job. I see that they have a Quik spray wax too.

Personally, I find liquids easier to use than pastes. I've used Megs Ultimate liquid and it's a dead simple product to apply and remove.
Their Ultimate quix wax is also a good product, but I wouldn't consider it any more than a touch-up product to extend the time between the application of a real wax. It's not a replacement for a full wax application, but merely a compliment to long term finish care.

I prefer liquids also, and just recently picked up some of the Meg's Ultimate liquid & spray wax. Use the Ultimate for your base wax, and the spray wax after washing between full waxes. It adds a little punch and some extra protection, but I would not use the spray wax alone.
The spray wax goes pretty quick, so I would pick up the gallon bottle of Amazon of the D156.

Thanks for the replies and tips. I'll go with the Liquid. I was thinking that it looked less intimidating.
I've used both a number of times. By hand and buffer. I absolutely find the paste easier to apply and especially easier to buff off. No contest!
This has left me with a mostly full bottle of ULW, which is fine. I use it for small jobs such as detailing a bike frame before a build.

Is clay bar absolutely necessary or will it just improve the end results? The vehicle in question and person have never been/applied clay bar.
Clay is part of the surface preparation which will account for the majority of your results, just like washing your car.
Clay bar will greatly improve the end result if your surface is not perfect and will have a greater impact on your results than choosing between different pretty good waxes/sealants.
The plastic bag test can be used to see how much your surface could benefit from claying.
Put hand in a plastic bag (like a grocery bag), Feel your car in the bag, with your fingers/fingernails and you'll be able to feel if it is smooth like glass, or has bumps and imperfections that the clay will clean up
