Mechanics who drink beer on the job

I pull on-call rotations in my job. When I'm on-call, I try to limit any beer consumption to one a night. I think I had one or two all of last week, so not too many nights where I had a single beer. So that's seven nights, including a three day weekend and perhaps two beers consumed during the entire week.

But at 230 pounds, one beer is not going to do much other than make me weigh just under 231 pounds.

I think the only time I've had a beer during the work day is on my birthday when we go out to lunch, and I'll have ONE beer with the boss, his treat 8^)

Aint got nothin on the chain-smoking Pepsi-drinking (nonstop) mechanic that the cigarette never leaves the mouth, IMHO. Not even around gasoline.

IMHO, alcohol on the job is unprofessional but if its a laid-back environment and the guy isnt -DRUNK- then MAYBE its ok.

When drug deals and cocaine enter the picture, then the picture gets fuzzier (but the price of repairs go down.)

I certainly wouldn't want my mechanic drinking, while working on my car. I usually DIY anyways, but if there is a time I need a mechanic, he better be sober.

I don't drink at all, never have, never will. If you want to drink, do it on your time and not at work.

I have never seen a mechanic drinking and as long as he isn't totally gone, wasted drunk and sloppy, I don't think I'd really care.

I'd rather have someone be relaxed with a beer than someone irritated and not focused.

If one of my guys was drinking on my job site they would be fired immediately.

When the day is over and the work is done break out the brews, before than no.

Honestly,I don't care what a guy does on his own time but when being paid by an employer to do a job,you do it sober.
You are absolutely right and I wholeheartedly agree. My condo site has 50 different men, various trades and accidents happen when you have a clear mind and usual reflexes. Being impaired puts every man on that site at risk. Not worth it and I won't allow it.
Now tinkering in your own garage,on your own time,on your own equipment or vehicles is a completely different animal. As far as that goes please pass me one

We had a transmission builder at the shop I worked at previously that demanded a refrigerator for his beer (Natural Light) in the shop.

He would drink beer from 8AM until he decided he was done working.

He was a really good transmission builder. Almost no comebacks on his work. When he was finally fired, warranty work skyrocketed. But he seems to be the exception to the rule.

I have to blow into breathalyzers all day long. I am the .000 sample. I cannot drink on the job.

I think its ok to go out to lunch and have 1 beer with lunch.. anything more than that.. lacks professionalism.

I would also be fired If I smelled of any drugs including alcohol at work.

then again the beer is cheaper than an ice tea at most restaurants...

I think this is funny . Alot of guys who build the cars get high and drunk on lunch hour. People just over look that. I agree though shouldn't do it if your working for someone. If you and a buddy are putting new heads on your truck though thats different.

no weed though just beer

When I started my job in 2007 where I still work, we had a mechanic; lets call him "hennessey" and he would carry two flasks; one with blackberry wine, the other with vodka. He installed a new engine in a 06' cobalt in about 1hr and 13 min. He smelled like he drank a whole bar. There were no pieces, parts, etc missing at all, and the car ran flawlessly. 3 days later, he was heading home, and a cop stopped him for expired pa regis. sticker on his plate; they searched his vehicle and found the alcohol, and he had 4 state insp stickers and 8 emission stickers on him. FIRED ON THE SPOT. I visited him about 4 months ago and he was in very BAD shape. Late last month; actually the 20th of Dec he passed away at 70. Alcoholics are alcoholics. We have a leach of a former mechanic at my work that wont help anyone. He drank himself dead last week.

I'd rather have a guy with a few beers that knew what he is doing than a coffee drinker who did not.

My BIL worked for most of the 90's at the Daimler truck plant in Wörth. They had a full-on cantina which served beer, and though my BIL claimed he only imbibed a bit on Fridays, he stated it was pretty much SOP that the old timers drank w/most meal breaks.

Not sure if that's allowed now...but a beer or glass of wine w/lunch (the major meal) during the work week is not looked down upon in any manner. Why, it's even healthy ("breaks up the fat"); Underberg, anyone?
