Hi all-

I have a 2024 Mercedes S580 with the M176 V8. Manual says the car requires spec 229.52 or 229.62 for best fuel economy. I had the oil changed at the dealer and they used 0W20 LiquiMoly Tech 6600 MB Spec 229.71/72. I was surprised they used a 0W20 oil. They always used 229/5 spec 5W40, that car is also the M176 V8.

Doing some research into this MB seems to specify the 71/72 oils for their 4 cyl turbo gas cars. Is it problematic to run this oil in this engine? Any thoughts. I've put about 1,300 miles on it since the oil change...

Thanks for your thoughts...

The only real difference between those specs is the viscosity. MB recommends an oil with an HTHS of either >3.5 or >2.9 cP. The 0W-20 is >2.6 cP, so it's one grade thinner than the thinnest grade MB recommends.

I'd have them switch it out with one of the thicker grades. Your oil temperatures probably won't get high enough over the winter months for the thinner grade to really matter, but I'd certainly have it changed by the spring.

I'm wondering if they typed in the wrong spec in the invoice and used the right spec. This is a pretty well regarded dealer, and they have serviced my cars before.

I will definitely take it back there and have it done properly...

It really does make you want to change your own oil...

That and everything else I've seen on cars that were worked on previously by "professionals".

That's what they will claim anyway... we used the right oil but typed wrong on the invoice....

My M260 engine takes 229.51, 229.52, and 229.71

In my M260 engine, 229.52 performs the best.

I have used Total Quartz Ineo MC3/Long Life, as well as Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30, with great results.

You want to stick to MB229.52.
If your manual does not state MB229.71, go back and ask for a change.

+1 on the 229.52 stuff. Mine has the M1 ESP 0w30 in it right now and it seems to love it.

It's possible that MB updated to the .71/.72 specification and it is this update which appears on the dealer software. In any case I would contact MBUSA first and then visit the dealer.

I checked on their fluid spec site and it is not indicated for my engine…
Correct. Only 229.52 and 229.61 are specified for the M 176.
