We just purchased a new Mazda3, and would like some advice on an oversized oil filter.

I have a Honda, and really like the ST3593A for it, and would like a recommendation on a ST filter if possible. I went to WalMart yesterday and tried to find the standard ST filter, but their book and computer did not have the Mazda3 in it. I was able to fine the 2.0 liter Protege engine that may be the same as the 2.0 in the 3 but am not sure of that either. The filter recommended is tiny.

I think you will find that the ST3593A will fit just fine. I use this filter on my Honda Accord as well as Mazda Miata. Unless this is the first Mazda with a new size filter which I doubt you will be fine.

I'm concerned about the threads. The engine was made in Japan, so they may be to a metric standard.

When researching an oversized filter for my Honda, I came across quite a bit of discussion about different threads, and also bypass valve settings. I think the 3593A has the correct by pass setting, but don't know about the threads.

I'll probably buy an OEM filter and the ST just in case the ST doesn't fit correctly, I can put the OEM on.

I have been using the ST 3950 on my truck. Not sure I can count of Wally's continuing to stock them. I may have to fall back on the ST 3593A. Got to be better than a PH 3950.
