Mazda3 Skyactiv - wrong oil filter?

You now know you have the correct filter because you looked at the filter and saw the part number? I have seen/heard so many times that we put in the correct oil/viscosity but, the paperwork was wrong. Does make one wonder. Ed

No they don't. If you look up those filter application guides, they are multi-purpose for many vehicles that do not have Skyactiv-G engines.

To compare, look up Wix 57002 and check its application guide. It was designed specifically for the Skyactiv-G. Wix had to spend a lot money to create a custom filter.

Let me clarify, I do not think harm will come from using other filters but I think it is important people know what has been designed for the Skyactiv-G and what has not.

Champ filters are $1 filters Fram Filtration (formerly Champion Laboratories) makes for quickie lube places. They design the filters to fit as many applications as possible to reduce the inventory requirements of the lube shops. They are probably close to the OEM specs, and usually close enough. For an uncommon engine like this Mazda, I'd bring my own filter, either Mazda or Wix 57002 or other specifically designed for this engine.

Oh, OK, thanks for the clarification! I was looking at the O'Reilly website and those filters had "Skyactiv" as one of the product details. I'll definitely be buying the filter myself next time.
I noticed that the Wix 57002 filter doesn't have the Anti-Drainback Valve, while the others that are supposedly compatible with Skyactiv do. Is that significant? I couldn't find detailed specs on the OE filter.

I doubt it. The filter doesn't need it with its vertical installation but I'd love to ask a Mazda engineer if having one is a problem. I could see it changing the flow characteristics of the filter.

I've been wondering the same thing. I am trying out the microgreen filter on mine. The one I bought is for Skyactiv as they carry a different part number for the non-Sky 2L. The one I bought does have an ADBV, but I would imagine that it probably works on other vehicles than just the Skyactiv.
