Hello all,

I traveled a lot during the summer and extended my oil change longer than the usual 5000 miles (8000 km) on my 2018 Mazda 3 with the 2.0L and I'm now a bit over 8000 miles (13 000 km). I checked it at 5000 miles and oil level was good, but checked it today a 8000 miles, and needed to add one full quart of oil to bring it to the full mark. The oil is Castrol Magnatec 0w20. No oil leaks at all.

Anyone here with Skyactiv's going longer OCI that needed to add oil? I would think its normal considering I went longer, but curious if someone else experienced the same.

Should I used another brand or maybe go with Castrol Edge Black jug 0w20?

Thanks!

yes, first time since I own the car I went this long, usually 5000 miles on the clock OCI.
Another thing to consider is while achieving this extra mileage it has been summer and depending on if you’ve been doing some long distance runs you may have cooked off some DI fuel dilution. I’m not familiar with skyactive but a good long run on my Honda 1.5 would drop the dipstick level a little bit.

Is your car still in warranty? Either case I wouldn't recommend going over 5000 mile/6 months on any oil change these days. If you are going to use Castrol, here is a link. However, there are many good oils available these days. https://www.castrol.com/en_us/unite...castrol-edge-oils/castrol-edge.html#tab_0w-20 You may do better with 0W-30. Have you ever sent in a used oil sample to be tested?

I have a 2018 mazda 2.0 ltr with 50,000 miles on it. Burns about 1/2 qt in 5,000 miles.
As I said, stick to a 3000 to 5000 mile or 6-month oil and filter change interval. There is nothing wrong with that rate of consumption. It is possible at 8000 miles the amount of oil it burns could go up because the oil itself is starting to shear. Next time you change your oil, draw a sample and send it in. This place is full of different lab suggestions. I use Polaris Labs, that is who Amsoil uses. You can buy one kit at a time from Amsoil as long as you register. I would move up to 5w-30, but that is just me. Good Luck @WobblyElvis

My daughters 2013 Mazda 3 2.0L 130,000 miles would loss 1.5+ish qts in 5,000. I myself won't push any GDI car past 5,000 miles, unless I were on a 100% hwy trip around the USA. I have switch all my family's cars to the "house oil" which is Valvoline 5w-30 Restore & Protect. After the second dump I am below 1.25.

I wouldn't consider 1qt in 8K miles any particular oil usage!
If you were losing 1qt in 3K miles then, I'd consider that some usage...even though the MFG will consider 1qt in 1K miles as normal...:cautious:
I'm not saying to switch to a heavier grade oil e.g., a FS 5W30 but you certainly can in that engine especially in the warmer months and lost of hiwy driving or "traveling" as you mentioned.

I service my grand nieces '15 Maxda 3, with 110K on the clock, at 5k to 6K intervales. It goes through very little if any oil.
Very nice car. I Grand Touring or something like that.

8K on the same oil, and the engine is GDI ? I'd say the oil just gave up ( shear) , and some fuel dilution burnoff. It's just 1 qt. Wouldn't be concerned. Take notice of future 5K oil and filter changes, and see if you lost any oil. If so, time to switch over to Valvoline Restore and Protect. That will clean things up and slow or stop that oil burning.

Stick to the 5K OCI interval. Monitor oil consumption between OCI to 5K. May also want to check PCV valve. Partially clogged can cause oil consumption also. Replace if needed. It should rattle easily if clean.,,no rattle or sticky rattle, replace it.

5K is my limit with any GDI. 4K for Hyundai, as my personal experience with their 1.6 Gamma and 2.4 Theta2 would attest. Our Mazda 3 and CX-5 seems to do well with 5K intervals so far.

Which Mobil one? ESP? AFE? Regular FS?
I'm almost sure it was M1 AFE 0W-20. There is small chance to be M1 5W-30 regular. I'll double check and let you know. I have the UOA from Blackstone Labs.
The oil was already gone with TBN 1 or 2, but Blackstone Labs advised to extend my OCI to 6K miles.
