So the ATF specified for the 2000 Protege I'm about to acquire is MAZDA M-V (NOT equivalent to Mercon V). Different opinions say that it is equivalent to Dexron III, a few say it stands for Mercon V (though it does not, its "Mazda 5").

Anyone know for sure? Apparently you can get the stuff from a dealer for $8-10 a quart but that's a price I'm not willing to pay, especially for a non-synthetic fluid. Is it really just a D-III clone? Any cheaper multi-spec ATFs that spec M-V? I know Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle does not specifically list as compatible with it.
 
I currently have a mix of M-V, Castrol Import, and Mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid in my Mazda 3. No problems at all. Just don't overfill or underfill.
 
I currently have Castrol Import Multi-vehicle ATF in my Mazda 3, I did a drain and fill 3 times, total of 9 quarts, about 40k KM ago, works with no problems, the best part, $20 for a 5 liter jug at WM.

I know Castrol doesn't list M-V spec on the bottle, but their site says it does along with a buch of other specs, they just list the most popular specs on the bottle, that's all.

I know there is a difference in semantics but notice all the fluids listed in uDummy's post are spec'd as both MerconV and M-V as is Import multi-vehicle and many other "multi-vehicle" ATFs. They can't be that different otherwise they wouldn't be listed together.

The fluid specified for your Mazda originally is Mercon V. Mazda M5 is backspecced. Both would be OK to use.

The fluid specified for your Mazda originally is Mercon V. Mazda M5 is backspecced. Both would be OK to use.


Actually, Mercon V and M-V are slightly different. A TSB was issued due to the differences between the 2 and the confusion of M-V and Mercon V. although this TSB does not list the Protoge, it lists the other cars.

Valvoline Maxlife ATF is what I am running in my Mazda6i 5spd ATX. Seems great so far. It and castrol import are probably the two cheapest options.

And for the other guy, MerconV is not a suitable replacement for MazdaV. MazdaV has higher viscosity requirements.
 
I am using Mobil 1 ATF in my Fusion which uses the same oil as yours and performs very well in all tempertures.
 
I am using Mercon V in my fiancee's transmission, she has a 1.6L Mazda Protege LX. I have done many drain and fills on her car with Mercon V. I have noticed no difference in the way the car shifts when warm or cold.
 
I used Mercon V for ~30,000 miles or so in my Mazda 3 with good result and recently have switched to Mobil 1 ATF since it does cover the Mazda spec.
 
The FSM for a 2002 Protege specifies "M-V or equivalent (e.g. Dexron III)".

If this is the case I may just use a Dex/Merc. It looks as though the fluid in the 2000 Protege hasn't been changed as often as it should have, so I'd rather do a bunch of drain/refills with a non-synthetic because of cost.

I just bought 9 qts of Castrol IMV ATF for my daughters 06 Mazda3 2.0L 4 speed auto transmission. I will do 3 drain and refills over the next,(oh, I don't know, maybe 6 mo!) She bought the car in late Aug 09 w/50,000 miles on the OD and now has 60,000 miles. The ATF was cherry red when she bought the car and it's just starting to change colour. Transmission shifts great and I want it to stay that way.
