Mazda Filter

All the maintenance items (filters, wiper blades, etc.), excluding the fluids themselves, at Mazda dealers come in both Mazda Genuine and Value line verions. I've never seen anyone run any serious tests of the two, for example air or oil filters, so no one knows how filtration compares in any dimension between the two. One is just less expensive than the other, as far as quasi-proven info goes.

I always bought the Mazda Genuine filters. The Value Line stuff seemed to me to be built the same as the lower-priced stuff at the auto parts stores. Whether they're good product is not the point. The point is they're significantly cheaper at the auto parts stores, at least around here.

The whole concept of "jobbers' filters" bothers me.
Why do we need cheaper versions of a cheap disposable thing?

Is the filter seriously that bad? I do 5k intervals, will it at least last for that? It’s a bit off a trip back to that dealer, and the claimed that’s all they had in stock because I asked why it was different. Parts dude just said “that’s what they are using now”.

Any other filter brand to recommend if I end up not using this? It’s for a turbo 2.5L

It's probably just as efficient or even more so than the other Mazda OEM filter. I'd use that one for a 5K OCI. The eCore center tube is fine. It might even have metal end caps, like the SuperTech MP had which is also made by Champ Labs. Mazda has approved the filter if it's being sold through the Mazda dealerships as a Mazda part.

Well, I didn’t think my engine was gonna blow up using these, but I am concerned about their ability to filter. I am a bit surprised by Mazda doing this.

My guess it's probably 99% @ 30u like the SuperTech built by Champ Labs are.

The Fram 7317 is the oversize for the Mazda and most Asian vehicles.
The equivalent in other brand filters will work fine too.

champ labs filters are usually fine. This one is e-core and has no louvers, which is a good thing.

I'm friends with the service mgr at one of my local Mazda dealers. They dont even carry the value line anymore, he said "we've had some issues with them". I said me too, the last few I've bought here, the amount of metal shavings in the mounting hole threads was startling. He just nodded his head yes and smiled.

That being said, I cut a few open a few years ago the last time I used one, and compared to the genuine Mazda filter, I couldnt find anything that looked much different. Looked better than the pictures of a lot of the crap aftermarket filters being cut apart here lately. They may be different now, I dont know. I will say, the louvers in the last one I cut open looked almost completely shut, I was very unpleasantly surprised. I cut all the media off it, washed it, wrapped duct tape around one end to seal it, and breathed through the other side. I could breathe through it like it wasnt even there, which pretty much put my louver paranoia to rest.

I've used those, as well as the more recent 1WPY-14-302 (made in Thailand). Both seem like fine filters. But I also don't see anything wrong with the MV version shown in the OP made by Champ Labs. It would be interesting to see the results of one of the light tests for the bypass.

The MV versions that have been made by Wix in Mexico have not always looked great (questionable louvers).

It may fit, but there are two different pressure requirements for the turbo vs the NA.

They may be different now, I dont know. I will say, the louvers in the last one I cut open looked almost completely shut, I was very unpleasantly surprised. I cut all the media off it, washed it, wrapped duct tape around one end to seal it, and breathed through the other side. I could breathe through it like it wasnt even there, which pretty much put my louver paranoia to rest.

Breathing through choked down louvers isn't even close to what thick oil at high flow rates would experience.

I ordered another Mazda Filter. This is the normal replacement one, made in Thailand. Seems a big difference than the value filter. Like The value filter, No ADBV

I didn’t catch it the first time either, I just thought it was tucked under the input slits. This is the first filter I’ve ever seen without one, at first I thought it was defective. It sits upright in the engine, so I guess really there is no need for one, just strange looking.

Completely normal that it doesn't have an ADBV. I thought the same thing about it not having one, until I did some digging. Mazda from what I can find out didn't want that in there because of the flow required for their Skyactiv engines. and yup it's vertical in the engine. So Mazda left out the ADBV didn't need it for their application.

oh ya definitely looked odd when I first saw one. I was like "did someone forget something?" lol.. What's cool about not having one is I can look into the pleats without cutting it apart, seeing how uniform they are. Glad you got another filter and going to use this one. You can definitely see the difference and it probably didn't cost that much more.

Nothing wrong with it per se, it’s an E-Core type, cheaper filter
