Went to the dealer today to pick up an oil filter for my impending DIY oil change. Parts guy gives me a plain white box filter. Not the usual grey/yellow box. Says “Mazda value” on it. Says it’s the only one they have. Anyone know anything about this filter? Says made in USA, is an E-core, looks like a champ labs filter (or at least the ones I remember using a few years back). a lot of mazda dealers keep pushing the "market value" oil filter claiming it's the same as the regular part number. It's not the same. It's cheaper for a reason. You might search the forum I believe there was someone who cut one open. It wasn't bad but not as good as the regular part number. EDIT (@Glenda W. just posted it as I typed this, Toyo Roki, that's the regular part number, excellent quality)

When I went to the mazda dealer for my friends new to them 16 CX-5 they tried pushing hard for the MV filter, I had to stand my ground and tell them, no I want the regular part. Dealers probably make more profit on the MV part.

also.. every MV parts I've researched on the Mazda forums have said the MV parts are junk. brake pads, wiper blades, air filters, etc. I agree, return it and get the regular part number.

Is the filter seriously that bad? I do 5k intervals, will it at least last for that? It’s a bit off a trip back to that dealer, and the claimed that’s all they had in stock because I asked why it was different. Parts dude just said “that’s what they are using now”.

Any other filter brand to recommend if I end up not using this? It’s for a turbo 2.5L

I mean I'm kind of a perfectionist, but reality? I don't think the MV oil filter would destroy your engine. Is it as nice as the regular part? no, but 5k it would get the job done.. I do know that the MV wiper blades are pure junk, worse than the $8 blades at walmart!

It's probably fine for 5K interval. I had always thought the MV line was made in Mexico, but that was for the standard filter. This version is for the turbo's.

I bought a couple cases of the Mazda Japan Roki filters for my two cars that have the Skyactive 2.5 (non-turbos.) When I was at the dealer getting a spare key programmed, the ONLY thing you could buy was the MV line of filters. They don't even stock the Japan ones. I bought mine from a dealer online.

Looks like that’s where I’m gonna have to go if I start OEM.. I’m a bit Leary going aftermarket due to the oil pressure relief being different in the turbo vs non turbo (hence the 2 different Mazda part numbers). Not sure which aftermarket would fill the bill.

I don't carry the MV filters, but a lot of dealers do. The pre-paid maintenance plans only take the value of the MV filter into account when setting up their pricing. Also you start to have too complicated of an inventory with the same part number as the OE and the Mazda Value. The sale reason as the brake pads, wipers, etc, the coupons that Mazda sends out only takes into account the price of the MV parts.

Glad to know that, I get most of my blades and stuff aftermarket anyhow.

I would trust the Premium Guard made filters (O'reillys has the Microguards.) I would also recommend the Pentius by the case on Amazon.

In 2012 my sister bought a Mazda3iTouring.
Back then, that Skyactiv engine (1998cc non-turbo) called for a new number due to a changed by-pass valve.
I believe the pressure was lowered.
However, the earlier versions fit just fine. I bought the right one (I think) from the dealer.
It took 6 months for Wix and Hastings to list a filter with the new by-pass valve pressure.

It'd be interesting to know if our friendly Mazda dealers stock both earlier and "post Skyactiv" versions.

Anyone know the what PSI the yellow bypass operates at?

It has been thought that the difference in the Skyactiv 2.5 turbo vs non-turbo oil filters is the bypass setting. The filter shown is for turbo Skyactiv.

That filter is fine. I would use it on my 2.5T.

Might as well just use the equivalent supertech for less than $4 as it’s likely a champ ecore as well. These filters are actually solid and I would not hesitate to run them 10k

Well, I didn’t think my engine was gonna blow up using these, but I am concerned about their ability to filter. I am a bit surprised by Mazda doing this.

Yep, these low cost filters are perfectly fine.

I also wonder about the the BPV pressure….
