Mazda 3 Skyactiv OEM oil filter CUT OPEN

A good bit of carbon sludge and an unidentified speck.

I don’t like the build up of particles on the bottom, by the bypass valve. 😳😬
I see many sparkles in that filter. I'd be darned worried if they are metal flakes.

Yea but the used oil analysis report showed a flawlessly wearing engine though. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think the filter did it’s job well. I just wish all that crap on the bottom of the can was caught by the filter media.

Feel good about that filter. It did its job!

I do believe the filter caught that material, for it was INSIDE the filter when you cut it open, only possibly mixing between the unfiltered and filtered sides when you cut it. Most of the bits were caught on the filter pleats -- right where they should be. :)

I don't really see any "metal sparkles" ... I think that is just light reflecting off parts of the oil soaked media. The junk in the filter looks like combustion/carbon blow-by

Good rule of thumb: If you can see it, the used oil analysis can't. Particles readily visible to the human eye are too large for spectrography.
