Hey everyone. So as many of you know I was in a car wreck and have been having fainting issues and dizzy spells.
Well my work let me know that since I haven't be cleared to come back till at least after Christmas that he is letting me go. And as many know this is a terrible time to have to find a job in the field. That being said when they clear me to go back to work since i won't have a job I'm tempted to make a change. It has to be a practical change something that won't be to hard to get into and will pay the bills. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm not really sure what's out there but there has to be something else I'd enjoy that can mlpay the bills. I can't be gone weeks at a time I have two kids to support. I have to be able to be there for them. I am pretty much mom and dad

That is tough but, I'm sure you will get through all this. I don't know your background ram_man but, possibly you can look into local "Job" site to get some idea of what type of opportunities are available, that you could do. Good luck with this and God Bless. Ed

@ram_man,I feel very bad for you, perhaps can you apply for disability payments because of your issue not allowing you to work? Disability which I feel might be appropriate here is also tax free. Until disability gets approved perhaps collect unemployment to get by.

Yes, file for unemployment asap since it will take a few weeks to come through. Have a free consultation with an attorney about filing for disability since that can take years. They only get paid if you win the case.

I'd vote for enrolling in a community college and getting an associates degree in electronics. Then you can become a field service rep for one of the manufacturers of hospital equipment. Those jobs have excellent pay and benefits. Good luck!

My recommendation and you won't like it, is to see a psychiatrist.

They will evaluate you to determine if it's physical or mental.

I knew someone who had blackout spells from stress. You need to create a life that your brain can handle.

I think the OP was recently in a car accident and has health problem(s) from his injuries. I agree he needs to file for unemployment benefits.

I wonder if his wife is working and he can take time off to recover.

Check for aid to dependent children and before you need it, heating fuel assistance. The latter if things get cold again may run out so pays to be on the top of the list.

They divorced earlier this year and he now has a girlfriend. He was coming from her place when he was in the accident.

A few thoughts. the car accident, was it while on company time?
have you heard of the Family and Medical Leave Act. look into it. i'm not sure they can let you go because it's a medical issue.
in the mean time, it's ALWAYS good to further your education.
I don't know what you need to make to make ends meet, but unemployment and disability will help you get through until you get on your feet. even minor constructions jobs can be had.. painting it rather easy. yard clean up.. there are tons of jobs one can do just to get some money and pay some bills, All depends what your willing to do.
there are local places you can get help from, food banks will give you boxes of food, just tell them how many are in your family. the local DES family services will pay some of your bills while in times of need. even paying rent.
if your a religious man, the local Catholic family charities will help you. they have a fund just for this type of problem. salvation army will give you gas vouchers to get you to and from school/work...

If these injuries are from the accident, DO NOT SETTLE, get a lawyer, the insurance company should be paying for most of this...

Who's fault was the accident? Was it single car or was there another party involved. Was that party insured, and/or was there "uninsured motorist" coverage on the poster's vehicle? In personal injury cases a letter of representation from a lawyer usually puts the matter on the front burner.

Guess they didn't feel like making a "resonable accommodation" for you.
That's [censored]. Sorry to hear.
See if any attorney can help you file for review for ADA, SSI and unemployment.

Just the car and guardrail were involved.

If accident happened on the job, he needs to talk with lawyer in his city.

Worker's Comp, Short / long term disability is what his employer is trying to get out of paying.

You may be protected by FMLA. I'd look what your rights are in this situation. Might not be a bad idea to consult with an attorney who specializes in employment issues. In most cases, an employer cannot just let you go because of medical issues, they must allow you a certain amount of leave.

Ram Man, very sorry to hear this.

What fields have you worked in previously, and what were you doing in this most recent job?

What would you like to do?

Can you find a good career counsellor? Many years ago I did something called, I think, the MMPI, back in my university days. (I had correctly divined that a B.A. might not get me a good job.) I answered a whole bunch of T/F questions, around 440 IIRC. They then compared my answers to those of people happy in their jobs - I was supposed to get in cartography (map making) and often wish I had. (I kind of drifted into my present occupation, and it's been good, but would have liked something maybe a bit more math-oriented & graphical - maps would have been perfect.) I was supposed to avoid sales like the plague, which I also did for the most part.

Anyway, please keep us posted, and the best of luck to you!

Given some of your past employment history (let go from at least a couple jobs, and one or two where you didn't get along) you're probably going to be hard to employ. Now that you're having health issues-in your prior post you said that the dizzy spell caused the accident-you've put yourself in a tough position.

There are labor fields where you might qualify for something, but I'm not sure if that would be "enjoyable". At this point you need to put yourself second and figure out a way to earn income for your kids, no matter if you "enjoy" the work or not. Their needs come before yours.

What a nice employer to let you go right before the holidays knowing that you have medical issues and two kids to support.
Guy has a heart of gold and no doubt has a special place reserved for him in the next world.
OTOH, the guy might have his back against the wall just as much as you do.
You should file for unemployment at once and also check out whatever they're calling food stamps these days. You've paid generously in taxes to support both programs so you may as well take advantage of them in your time of need.
You obviously need to seek medical attention for your unexplained blackouts and may need to file for Medicaid for you and your children since COBRA is an unaffordable cruel joke for most people who lose their jobs.
Finally, you need to be you and decide where you want to go next.
Maybe in your field and maybe something new. Local unemployment offices can help as can local community colleges. Avoid for-profit schools as you would the plague.
Meanwhile, you can probably pick up some part-time work to help with the monthly nut.
I'm not trying to sound too sunshiny either.
You've been dealt a tough hand and you have to play it.

You can immediately start earning some money by donating plasma. Look up donation centers in your area, read their web pages, check their ratings, pick one and go get signed up.

You can do this while following up on the other suggestions here.

Good luck...

How does undiagnosed fainting and dizzy spells factor into this?

Yes that might not be the best direction to take!
