In August of 2012 I purchased a 2003 Ford Escape with 157K on it. There was an oil leak at time of purchase, but since it was new to me I had no idea the extent of the leak. I dumped the oil and put in PP 5w-20. I ran that oil for 1,000 miles and in that period of time I probably added 1 to 1.5 quarts. I thought that amount was excessive so I came here to BITOG and started reading....reading and reading some more. I came away with two items.....use Maxlife and check/change the PCV valve.

Changing the PCV valve on that Duratec V6 was a major pain. From what was pulled out I doubt it had ever been changed. I also added Maxlife in the 5w-30 flavor and a NAPA silver filter. Since that work was performed one month ago, the oil level on the dipstick has not changed. There is the occasional small drop on the driveway but nothing of consequence.

I am sold on Maxlife! I am sure the PCV change had some impact but I think that Maxlife is also a star performer. I'll keep you all updated if anything changes.

I just wanted to pass along my positive experience with Maxlife.

Great to hear!
Numerous people report that Maxlife has been the best at reducing leaks more than any other oil out there.
I know I'd use that first if I had been in your shoes.

+1

If I know for certain an engine has a leak (I can see it on the ground) then I RUN don't walk to get Maxlife, it is a go-to oil. for a leaker for me.

I have a 2003 Taurus with the same engine. I put PU 5W20 in it and it leaked. Now it has Maxlife 5W20. It leaks much less.I am hoping it will continue to decline.

Me the same even though my MPG suffer a bit. I usually run Maxlife in summer no matter the age of engine just for seal treatment. In winter, I switch back to synthetic. In spring or fall, just use regular for the value.

Do you plan on tracking down the leak and repairing it?

Good point as it is always worth trying to find the source of the leak just in case it's something simple like the sump plug washer or oil filter seal, but a 10 year old car with 157K miles is not worth spending too much money on.

You might reduce the oil consumption further if you do what the OP did and move up a grade to the 5/30 HM oil.

This engine is spec'd for 5w/30 in the UK and elsewhere so it's hard to see any harm. May want to stay away from the really "thick" 5w/30 HM oils like Mobil1 and full syn MaxLife though.

While I don't fully doubt the mystical, magical powers of MaxLife (ML NextGen didn't help with my rear main seal leak, but who am I to argue with the successes others have had), I'm sure bumping up a grade and switching from a full syn to a semi-syn also played a role.

Maxlife reminds me of Castrol because of how dark it gets with 1k of OCI... MLNG has $3 off at local Walmart

Toto.

Please do post! All other UOA's I've seen with Maxlife in the 4.0 have been stellar, but I don't believe I've ever seen one with the full syn, just the blend.
