Changed my oil, which was maxlife syn 10/30 sl with 6500 miles, to maxlife syn 5w30 sl for the winter months. I have noticed that with only 800 miles or so of use that the 5w30 oil is nearly black. It is almost as dark as the 10/30 when i changed it with 6500 miles. GMC truck, 4.3 stick with 110,000 miles and i changed the pcv valve before the oil change. The air filter is clean and i have owned the truck for over 10 years. I average 300 miles of driving every week. I dont let this engine idle to warm up i just start it and go.I used to change the oil at 3k, then i went to 5k a few years ago after finding this site. This is the second batch of group 3 oil to go in this engine.

Have you used a 5w30 before?
Wondering if maybe the 5w30 is able to get into oil channels that the 10w30 hasn't been able to get into??
I know it sounds weird, but I have heard that at times, if you use a thinner oil - which it is thinner at start-up - it is accessible to more areas of the engine and can act as a flush, per say.
For instance, I have one engine that has hydraulic lifters that are known theoretically for getting clogged, the TSB from Isuzu says to use a super thin, aka Mobil 1 0w30 oil for one OCI to help clear/clean the lifters.
Another thought - I've heard the Maxlife can assist with slight cleaning abilities, and seeing as this is only your 2nd oci with a group 3, maybe it's cleaning house??
The last thought I have is maybe this oil's too thin for that engine, thus breaking it down quickly.

My theory on this is that it's cleaning your engine. You probably got half the engine gunk out with the first batch/OCI of Maxlife Synthetic. Alot of the spots that had a buildup have a thinner layer of gunk now. So new oil that contains a new batch of additives for cleaning is now cleaning what remains of whatever gunk you have in that engine.
Since the oil is new, the cleaning additives are stronger/better now than when the oil ages to 4-5-6-7K. That's my opinion anyways!

at 110,000 miles you are bound to loosen some crud up with switching to a High Mileage Synthetic
