I received a flyer from an Valvoline Quicklube concerned that i missed their 3,000 mile oil change interval (running Mobil 1 15W50 -yeah, right). It stated that Maxlife "stop knocking and hesitation"...please explain to me how Maxlife stops knocking and hesitation versus All Climate or any other good oil ? Is it even legal for Valvoline too make this claim ? Isn't most knock considered to be caused by pre-detonation and more fuel/mixture related ?

Maybe their thoughts are, if you're getting oil past the rings, this oil may stop that,

.

I don't see how any oil could affect detonation. Perhaps it could clean the rings helping compression, but this wouldn't help detonation.

Oil leaking past seals and the like could accumulate within the cylinder, resulting in carbon deposits. And carbon deposits, sharp edges, and hot spots in general can lead to detonation/knocking. Probably some connection to hesitation as well. And a High Mileage oil like MaxLife could reduce such seepage.

That said, the link is so weak and so lame that this is misleading as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not surprised by these claims nowadays. I work for a consumer electronics company, and if not checked, these sales and marketing types can really dream up some unbelievable things that defy all common sense.

I got the free Maxlife and put it in my 4.3 L chevy S10, replacing Mobil 1 10W30. Can't say it feels any different but the oil pressure is slightly higher cold, maybe 5psi, and slightly lower hot, same psi. I don't think it's my imagination as I watch the gauge closely. The gauge may not be absolutely accurate but is quite sensitive (not like a Ford).

Strangely enough, it also got the best mileage of it's life on a trip right after the change. At 5K total miles this is probably coincidental.

The oil stays in the combustion chamber smoldering. It's too heavy to be purged with the intake/exhaust charge ..so it sits there. As soon as enough air/fuel mix is present ...it ignites it. This would happen sometimes with my relatively brand new BMW 320i (78) when the dealer bulk filled the crankcase. It was over filled ...if I was up near the redline and let off the gas ..oil would get sucked up into the rings. Going from coast to power would provide a confirming "puff" and I would be pinging until it fully burned off.

It may be the ester content that they can claim as providing a cleaning effect and therefore aiding in curing knock and hesitation from carbonaceous build-up, varnish, etc. on engine parts.
