This seems elusive. I picked up a bunch of the clearance sm/an maxlife next gen 10w-40, and want to know this ht/hs number is for this oil. Trying to decide between this, or the edge 5-w50 to run in my BMW.

Any 10W-40 should have HTHS of at least the 3.5 minimum you car should require, although the OM of your car will specify only SAE grades.
I posted a really good UOA of Nextgen Maxlife 10W-40 from my 318i last summer.
I'd run Maxlife 10W-40 in any old German car without even thinking about it.
This stuff just seems to work well in providing for low wear metal numbers, reduced consumption, reduced leaks and good fuel economy.

Edge 5w50 is way too thick for that motor unless you're tracking it every weekend (even then, a 5w40 would be fine).

I've always preferred the thicker oils in these engines. Edge 0W-40 in my m50 powered car was nice for the wintertime, but a little valve clatter on cold startup. In the GA heat and 80+ mph traffic and almost daily WOT runs that my vehicles see - I like thicker oils, for the most part

And yes, I ran Rotella 5W-40 in my track cars, but might try this 5W-50 in the next one.

A ti with a 2.8 should be a little rocket.
I hope you left the orginal badge on yours.
The average e36 M3 driver might wonder how a 318 could be leaving him for dead.

lmao, oh yes, I'm a big fan of the sleeper style. Notice my sig - also own a Volvo 960 wagon with a 5.3l alu GM engine making 300 whp
