I know I will probably get some negative feedback for this. That is fine. I just purchased 20 quarts of Maxlife ATF to replace the current fill in my transmission which is about 80% Amsoil ATF. I am going to do a complete flush here at home with the Maxlife ATF, and plan on doing 10k drain and refills with it. My theory is that in the long run it will be more cost effective, as I don't plan on purchasing Amsoil for my vehicle anymore. My plan is to run Maxlife products in the transmission and the engine as long as everything shifts nice with it, it will be in the transmission for the rest of the cars life. With 10k drain in refills in my Nissan Altima 2.5, I think it will work out okay.

Ok, I'll hold back my "why on earth would you do that" comments until sometime in the future.

Trying to save a little money with gas prices and the fact that my wife is having babies faster than I have bowel movements.

I can't see myself extending OCI's out to make Amsoil cost effective, but I do see myself doing 5k OCI Maxlife 5w30 and 10k OCI Maxlife ATF drain/refill.

I don't see how buying 20q of MaxLife ($100) for a transmission already full of AMSoil is "saving money".

I go with 1 year AMSoil 3q drains on my car and 1 year with Castrol Hi-Mi ATF on the CRV. Gotta like the VI of 200.

My theory is Amsoil Transmission fluid is cheaper than a transmission replacement, I have used Mobil 1 trans fluid, Redline D4, and neither of these fluids made the trans shift like Amsoil ATF, I knew a guy who has a 1986 Chevrolet Astro Van that are notorious for having transmissions that are not that great, he has always used Amsoil ATF, but he did have to rebuild the transmission, it was rebuilt at 397,000 miles. I talked with another guy who had the same year van and he used Royal Purple ATF and he had his rebuilt at 256,000 miles, its your money, but remember the money you save on Maxlife ATF could end up costing you more in the future.

I can tell you how to fix that problem.

As far as ATF goes, I think the most cost effective would be to use Amsoil ATF to 50K with a Magnefine or similar filter.

you will notice shift differences in maxlife and amsoil.. dont get me wrong i like maxlife atf a lot. i have used it for quite sometime. but since i started using amsoil, its hard to swithc back.. i know $$ can be tight and i totally understand that. but remember with maxlife you have shorter drain and fill intervals.. good luck to ya

was gonna chime in, there is a way to solve that but Johnny beat me

either way you decide to go, good luck with it.

both are good products, but would tend to agree the amsoil would prob be better in the long drain intervals.

But do what you gotta do,

Ummmmm yeah....

Have you used both products and know that there will be a difference in shift quality in my vehicle? I have a Nissan Altima 2.5 which loves to shear ATF. It has somewhat harsh shifts with any fluid I have used.

I still have not done the switch yet. Now, I may not. I am not 100% sure yet.

Has anyone used both products and been able to see a distinct difference?

Stud,

A couple things:

A 10k drain & fill is too frequent. I know, I know, but seriously, it is too frequent.

How long has the Amsoil been in? I'd put in the Amsoil & up that ATF OCI quite a bit & you'll end up saving both Time & Money.

I agree with tpitcher. I really thing 10k is too often. You might as well change your oil every 1k miles too.

Stretch it out a little bit.

Nope, haven't compared them and I was being a little smart I guess. I get a little turned off when people say you will notice a change in performance simply by switching an oil. I guess that could hold true in some vehicles but going from conventional to synth ATF in other cars to me showed no difference that I could tell.

It would show a difference when it is cold, I would think. As well, I have noticed firmer shifts with a flush but that is as much the flush and the fluid being new as the change. Hard to objectively judge.

If he were flushing the Maxlife every 10k miles, yep, way too short of an OCI. But he's indicating he'd drain and re-fill the pan.

Cooper: what's the pan capacity you'd be draining and re-filling every 10k miles? And how many miles per year do you drive, on average?

And with Momma cranking out all of those kids, where do you think you'll find the time every 10K miles to mess with a drain and re-fill?

Why 10,000 miles? Your owners manual probably says every 30,000 miles. I would at least go out that far. With a good Syn ATF your could probably go an easy 50,000 miles. But 30,000 with any would be fine.

Heck, I bet most people never change their transmission fluid and it goes 100,000 miles.

I am going to do 10k drain and refills. It has a capacity of 9.8 quarts, and a drain and refill drains about 5 quarts. 10k is not unreasonably short. I have to be able to get out of the house and do something.
