Maxima oils

I just had the 500 mile service done on my new Bonneville. The dealer used the Maxima 15W-50 instead of the Mobil Racing 4T 15W-50 that is packaged for Triumph that I had expected. They said that the Mobil works great in the water cooled bikes, but found the Maxima was better in the air cooled bikes.

ED, The Mobil 1 Racing 4T is a 10W-40 motorcycle oil. The Mobil 1 V-Twin is a 20W-50 motorcycle oil.

Your Bonneville owner's manual specs a 20W-50 oil, doesn't it? That's what is in the manual for my '05 Speed Master. Yeah, 15W-50 is OK too.

Don't know much about the Maxima oils and could not find an oil analysis more than two years back. But I suspect that your dealer is feeding you a line.... there's some marketing or maybe more profit margin in there for them.

It's interesting that Triumph recommends Mobil 1 oil in the owner's manual. The jug has "Triumph" all over it and "Mobil 1" in smaller letters. An excellent recommendation, BTW.

For the price of the Maxima oil you could save money by purchasing the Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 or the other top-of-the-line motorcycle oil - Amsoil MCV 20W-50. Both of these are proven top performers.

Moto mechanic that I go to uses maxima syn blend. He builds motors and he says that the ester content and the good quality base stocks make it a good oil for the money. I run rotella in everything except my YZ250F which I run Maxima in. If there's a motor that takes more abuse than a MX bike, I don't know what it is.

kbalowe: The Mobil 1 Racing 4T is available in a 15W-50, just not though regular US channels. This is what Triumph supplies with their name on the jug:

The specified oils are 10W-40 or 15W-50, 15W-50 being best for my climate. The valves got a bit noisy with the 10W-40 break-in oil when hot, the engine is much quieter with the 15W-50.

The Maxima was a bit cheaper than the Mobil 1. At this price, a couple of dollars either way won't make much difference.

I'll probably try the Triumph Mobil 1, Mobil 1 V-Twin, Amsoil MCV, and the 15W-50 BMW oil I've been running in my K-whiner and see which one shifts the best.

berlyn: Thanks for that link. I did a search and didn't come up with that one.

JDD: It does look like Maxima is a good oil, certainly worthy of considering continuing to use. I did see that the 10W-40 blend did very well in the tests that matter in Amsoil's oil comparison. I wonder why they didn't test the 20W-50 or the Extra line. Maybe those did a bit too well.

maxima and motul are some of the better oils out there. Amsoil, M1 right up there too.

All great oils, and if they work in your particular application all the better

Look at any VOA of Maxima and you can't not be impressed. Group V oil with way over-the-top add packs. I've never seen any other oil with more ZDDP (zinc and phosphorus for extra wear resistance)in it. I use Maxima Maxum Extra in my racing bikes and I never have wear related problems. Only downside - most expensive oil on the market. But my YZ250f only uses 1.25 qts, so cheap insurance.

I don't have a motorcycle, I own a moped and I've used only 1 of their products, Castor 927. It's a great oil that I've used at 32:1 and the tear down looks immaculate. Mopeds don't have powervalves so I don't have to worry about buildup other than at the pipe (it is a little harder on the pipe/silencer).

For 4 strokes I use AMSOIL, hands down one of the best I've used.

Maxima oils are BEEFYily enhanced.

A friend has run a number of oils in his ST1100 motorcycle and likes the Maxima, by far.

I would think the M1 would be cheaper. Maybe your dealer sold you the Maxima blend and not the synthetic.

It was the full synthetic, $46.xx for the Gallon jug. I think the Triumph branded M1 was $49.xx, so not much difference.

Maxima Maxum and Extra are Group V basestocks with massive add packs. Probably the best oil made. M1? Ho-hum, yawn. Way overpriced and probably not even Group V or IV but mostly Group III.
