Anybody have any ideas on the Mastercraft Strategy tires. I live in New Hampshire and went to Town Fair to get some all-season tires for my 01 civic. They pushed the Mastercraft and Uniroyal brands mostly. And I finally had Mastercraft Strategy installed on the car. I dont know much about tires. If anybody knows about these tires, your feedback will be very helpful.

oh that sucks. i paid $99 for each tire. plus the following,
1) road hazard - $39
2) alignment - $49
3) computer balancing - $51

it totally ended up being like $540. Wouldn't mind the price if it is good for 60,000 miles with good traction. Just waiting to see if there is any good feedback on this. else would be returning them. Thanks.

You can get much better tires for your Civic for $99 each. What year Civic, trim level and tire size do you have?

I forgot to add one more thing. They also give these.

1) pro rata mileage w/o care - 30000 miles.
2) pro rata mileage with care - 60000 miles.

That was mostly why I bought them.

I have a 2001 Civic Coupe EX. The tire size I had put on was 195/60R15. I dint have anything to do with the size. They probably put that size because of the size of the wheels on the car. Factory recommended is 185/65/R15 though. I got that info from tirerack.com.

Return them if you can and buy from a reputable dealer. Did they ask you for permission before putting the non factory recommended size on your Civic? Most likely they didn't have the OEM size available and pushed the size they had in stock.

The only catch is you now need to come to them with four brand new tires for them to mount and balance them for you so you don't drive away on wheels without tires.

Checkout Discounttiredirect.com. They have brand name tires for your vehicle for $55-$70 shipped.

Ok thanks for your suggestions. I will see what can be done. Is there a particular brand that would suit the Civic well? What are the other brands that you might recommend? They dint ask me for the size. They just took me to the area that had 195/60/R15 tires and let me take a look. like I already said they mostly had Uniroyal Tiger Paws and Mastercraft brands and also recommended them.

Have the exact same vehicle since new. The 195/60/15's are the size I've run since the OE Firestones came off. It is the size that Honda went to in 04 for the same generation Civic. They are slightly wider and I much prefer them to the narrower 185's. It would be a +0 size, so that is no issue. I've also run S rated Avid Touring for ~65k with no issues, good tires. I wouldn't hesitate to run a quality S rated tire again. Now have H rated Gen HP's.

As for the Mastercraft, I have heard of them, sold by the small independent dealers. The pricing does seem steep, plus all the extra stuff they sold you (RH, CB, Align. etc), but it is what it is. As mentioned Discount Tire Direct is a good place to look last after you've got your pricing on your preferred tire, they will try to match or beat your best price and free shipping. But, that might be a moot point this time.

Off the top of my head, I think the Mastercraft brand is Coopers alternative i.e. lower cost brand....I know TownFair sells them. But, I agree with the other posters, that that per tire cost sounds high.

I wonder whether the OP can take them back for credit?

Life would be simpler if you asked for opinions BEFORE buying the tires....

Sometimes I wondered about these questions, why ask for opinions after works had been done.

Back to topic, Mastercraft is not a good brand tire and the price is too high for what it is (I will need 4 tires in late Spring, I priced one of the best tire for about $450 installed in size 235/45-17).

Go to tirerack.com and search for your tire size. If you like all season tire, then look at customer survey and buy 1 of the top 5 on the survey. You can buy it from Tirerack or other online tires and have it install at local tire store or Walmart.

Yeah that would be true. However townfair offers a 30-day test drive option. Tires can be exchanged within those 30 days. Cant get a refund though.

I am asking because I am on the 30-day test drive option. I can have them exchanged with something better. tireack.com does have a lot of surveys and I am leaning on the BFGoodrich Traction T/A H. Thanks.

Mastercraft Strategys are basically Cooper Lifeliners, which are a good tire. The tread is EXACTLY the same. They'll be just fine as a T rated tire.

I'm not sure why there is all the hating the the MCs, as most of the indie shops around here run them with little/no issues.

I've actually considered the Strategy myself, as the local tire place by me can offer me a nice deal on them.

You did overpay though, as I can't see these tires being more than 75 bucks each....

As far as tire size, it just depends how you drive....

They probably charged me more because they offer the 30000 miles w/o care warranty or 60000 miles with care. So anytime something goes wrong with the tires within the warranty miles, they would either repair it or replace it. And also offer lifetime free rotation, free flat repair and a few other things. They might call these services free but actually push them on the tire prices. I am not too sure though. Also I think online is always cheaper. But again I declared on my first post that i dont know much (anything to be honest) about tires.

I believe Mastercraft tires come with a road hazard warranty at no additional cost. You might want to check with mastercraft, and if so get a refund on the road hazard warranty from your tire dealer.

The Strategy is a decent quality, midrange passenger tire. It's probably the Mastercraft "A/S" tire that people are thinking of. That one is a tire built for a lower price point.

Unless you push that car hard, the Strategy tires should perform well on a 2001 Civic. I'd keep them if they were on our 2002 Civic.

The best rated All-Season by owner survey on Tirerack is Michelin HydroEdge with Green X. The price is $98 for 195/60-15 + shipping. Print the price + shipping from Tirerack and take it to your tire shop, asking them for price match.

This Michelin HydroEdge with Green X should lasted more than 80k miles on your Civic if you rotate the tires every 5-6k miles.

Next time when you need car related repair/maintenance that costs upward $50-100 or more that you are not sure if it is good or bad, ask for opinions before not after it had been done.

Yeah, I think we all agree you got hosed in the price. I did a google search after I posted, using the tire and the size, and you can check that out for yourself, it won't make you happy.

I also found out they are a Cooper (made) Tire, the tire themselves will likely be ok. On the Mastercraft website it shows them with a T speed rating, but it doesn't show the 196/60/15 size. However, another site that sells the tire in that size says they are H rated, which is OE. You can find it on the sidewall but either way that shouldn't be a factor on the Civic.

As for the size, again 195/60/15 is the OE size Honda went to 3 years later, for the same generation as the 01. Honda obviously felt that was the preferable size for the 7th generation. Looking at the OE IMO, the 185's looked very narrow to me, I'd stick to the size you got, if it were me.

I'm not sure the Uniroyals would be any better, you would need to know which Uni it is, and do some research online.

You've learned an expensive lesson, but experience is the best teacher. Next time research tires at Tire Rack, and look at online tire companies like Discount Tire Direct and Treadepot for price comparison with TR. And, call DTD about a price match including the shipping price.
