Hoping there may be a marine tech roaming around, or at least someone with some insight.

I have a '95 Sx Cobra out drive that I need to work on. Quick background story... This entire boat has been flawless for me. Even as old as it is, I've never had a mechanical problem. The SX drive has proven to be bullet proof, and the Ford 5.0Fi engine has been a dream. Two summers ago I ran aground and bent the propeller shaft. Not being a boat mechanic, or having the specials tools needed I decided to take this to the pros and have them replace the shaft. I had them replace the prop shaft with a new one, and while they had it, I had them replace the u-joints, gimble bearing, and bellows just for piece of mind due to the age of the unit. First time I took it out after repair, I noticed that the prop shaft became loose and there was play in the shaft. I took it back to the shop, they took care of the problem. Apparently something was either shimmed incorrectly, or the bearing carrier wasn't torqued correctly. After that, everything seemed fine.

Two days ago I noticed that there was gear oil leaking on the ground. Running down the inside of the prop, and onto the ground. Removed the prop, and can see that it appears to be leaking past the prop shaft seal in the bearing carrier.

I have not started taking it apart yet, but according to the parts break down in my shop manual, it appears that it *should* be this only seal that could be causing my leak. Before I remove the bearing carrier and replace the seal, I wanted to make sure this is something I can do. Being that I'm not replacing any hard parts, I am assuming that I can measure the installed depth of the bearing carrier, remove the carrier, replace the shaft seal, reassemble and torque it back to the ~220 ft lbs it should be, and double check the installed depth.

Questions:

1. Am I correct in seeing that this is the only seal that could be causing my leak?
2. Can I remove and reinstall the carrier without any major issue since nothing is changing. Shim setup should all remain the same.
3.Any tips, tricks, or issues I could be running into?

I've uploaded a couple of pictures to make sure I am seeing everything correctly. I'm looking at replacing #34 and 35.

You need to vacuum and or pressure test it after you are done.

Could something happen to the shim by removing the bearing carrier? Also, isn't the vacuum testing to ensure that there are no leaks between the upper and lower?
