Marine Gear oil be used in an Auto?

Just wondering if marine gear oil 90w can be used in a diff requiring 80w-90 gear oil?
 
I have a 5 gallon bucket of Yamalube marine Gear Hypoid oil. Would be used for the diff of the Honda Ridgeline Truck too? Can find any spec on the Yamalube gear oil.

Marine gear oil says GL5 SAE90
Outboard gear oil says SAE90 GL4

I'd have no problem using the Marine GL5 SAE90 in front/rear-ends or transfer cases that require a GL5 gear oil.

The outboard gear oil should not be used in a front/rear-end requiring GL5. But, I'd use it in those GL4 manual transmissions.

If the Ridgeline requires a GL5, use the marine gear oil. Massachusetts winter and a straight weight might not be the best for cold weather MPG.
 
I am a Ridgeline owner also and I have changed the rear diff fluid in mine a twice. I dont think I would use the gear oil. The oil that Honda says to use (VTM-4 fluid) is more like a transmission fluid. Just my opinion.
 
that rear diff will NOT LIKE GL5 of any flavor. It has electronically "bumped" clutches on both axles IIRC and is very picky about friction properties. Need that VTM fluid. To give you an idea, the simpler CR-V implementation of AWD spec'ed a ~60,000 mile life for VTM. In the MDX rear, which I believe is the same as the ridgeline, it calls for 15,000 changes as the clutches are always minimum 10% engaged in the R'line & MDX. The clutches seldom lock but always slip some, hence the fluid wear. VTM fluid ONLY.

Also, IIRC, the full lock, at least in the MDX, is good for 155 Ft/lbs of static torque per wheel (maybe more under limited slip condition??--155 seems low for driveline but i saw that in garage test specs). Takes about 5 amps per wheel to 100% the clutchpack. Doesn't seem like much but it seems to work just fine in the MDX and you can sure feel it when it binds.

My bad. I meant the transfer case oil. Honda recommends 80w-90 gear oil. Yamalube gear oil is GL-5 SAE90. I used VTM from Honda for the rear diff. Sorry for the confusion.
 
i think it'd be fine in that itty bitty gear case (basically a PTO). it certainly won't corrode or rust in there, the only thing I might wonder about is if the yamalube has any drawbacks at those temps. But I don't think it'd be a problem.
