map update = 60 min IDLING?

What gives you the idea that the idle time will do something to the engine? Cop cars,
taxis and service vehicles etc spend as much time at idle as they do running

you can do it without the engine started the idle is to keep battery from dying.

just put it on "run" setting with engine off and have battery charger hooked up.. turn off all accessories you can such as blower motor, headlights etc.

or just idle and use the $3. worth of gas.. no damage will result.

Is this IDLING going to cause future engine problems or is a normal operation for modern engines & oil?
2018 Subaru Legacy 2.5 cu takes 5 qt. 0-20w syn oil.

No problem. The old complaints against extended idling were when engines were carbureted and had sliding cam followers. Your engine has neither. The carbs would slobber excess fuel into the engine, diluting the oil, causing it to thin out. The slider tappets would suffer at low speeds because spring force overwhelms dynamic force at idle speed, causing high contact stress.

Update your maps and see how long it actually takes. When I bought my Pilot I was told the same thing. Took all of 10 minutes.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions. I only presented this question because the Subaru GPS would no recognize "NJ Jug Handles" and neither would a HH Garmin.
There is more to this than you may be aware of. Your tips helped, however I just set up WAZE hoping it will handle all the Jug Handles where I live.

It's only a legitimate question on BITOG as the rest of the world rightfully uses common sense and even if the thought popped in their mind they'd just use that common sense and move on. If a single 60 min idling event had ANY effect on a modern car engine then we're all screwed because these cars are fragile. A couple thousand hours of idling because the car sits at the start of a work zone on the highway in 90F temps for 12 hours per day....perhaps that would have an effect.

I went to a U-Connect class earlier this week and learned that the reason they want you to do over the air updates while parked is because the back up camera will be disabled.

Or more. We had a few lot boys that were moving cars around the lot, parked one got called to do something else and the car idled until it ran out of gas. The kid forgot about the car. LOL Once or twice we'd come to work the next morning and the car was still idling, sometimes 12 or more hours.
