Manual fluid for '94 Integra

I have a '94 Acura Integra w/ 210,000 miles and was thinking about changing the gearbox fluid next oil change. The manual calls for motor oil, and that's what I used when I changed it at 170,000 miles (think I put in Mobil's 5W-40 Turbo Diesel oil). I did a search and it looks like either Redline or Amsoil's MTF would be the way to go, but I can't get either locally. Would Synchromesh work better than motor oil? What would you guys recommend I do?

If you get the GM "FM" stuff it should be comparable to the Redline. Getting the Friction Modified stuff is the key. Since GM sells many different varieties it would be easy to get the non FM if not looking for it.

It's actually what Honda uses for a tsb on the Accord V6 with the 6 speed manual.

Synchromesh does wonders for manual transmissions with lazy synchronizers - if your synchros are working well I'd leave well enough alone, though.

"Cheap" synthetic of the correct weight would probably do just fine. Be careful about using an oil with a lot of molybdenum in it, though.

In that order would be my suggestion.

Redline MTL worked great in my '90 Integra (which also speced motor oil).

So if i wanted to go w/ Redline MTL, what would be the best place to get it? I'm pretty sure nobody around here carries it. Might just stick w/ motor oil for convenience, but hoping to take this car to 300K so don't mind spending a little extra if Redline will work better and last longer.

Redline MTL will not lasted longer than Amsoil MTF or newer/current Honda MTF. The previous Honda MTF was not very good, but the current MTF is much better. I'm having Honda MTF in my S2000 along with M1 75W90 in the differential.

No idea - I'm in Canada. This stuff is infinitely more available to just about any American than it is to me from the way most people talk here. I have to drive about 30 minutes to find full product line over the counter and there are nowhere near as many online retailers of specialty products within Canada. I think you can even get Redline products for good prices on amazon.com.

Amsoil MTF should also be the correct weight for you too and is an excellent fluid. My 1998 BMW very slightly prefers Redline MTL and I have personally used Redline MTL in a similar platform as yours so that was the basis of my recommendation.

I would definitely go with a purpose-designed, synthetic synchromesh fluid over motor oil - without a doubt. If you can easily get Amsoil MTF, then try that.

I just replaced the MTF in my 99CL after only 20K and the improvement in shifting was amazing. I used Honda MTF, always have, but wish I could get something that would last longer. I don't know if it's the heat here in the southwest or if Honda could make a better fluid.

FWLIW, I really like Reline's MT-90 - it feels noticeably 'smoother' in the stupidly-hot Aridzona summer. The 'standard' MTL is probably what you'd want with a Midwest winter looming.
