This was ran on my dads 2004 Audi A4 with the 3.0 V6. Just a background to the car to those of you who dont know, he bought the car back in January with leaking valve cover gaskets. The deal was that we'd replace those if the dealer fixed the windshield, driver window motor and paid for a replacement laser cut key fob. Long story short, we discovered a broken cam lob and had the engine replaced. 3k later and it now has a junkyard engine with around 120k. (If you heard the PO's name, you'd swear she was an exotic dancer.. so that is the joke on why the poor car appears thrashed.) The first oil changed was done about 1k after the new engine was installed and it looked great.

The filter has about 6k and since the engine is "new", I wanted to keep the interval low before running it to the suggested 10k interval. M1 0w40 came out and went back in followed by a WIX filter.

My only complaint about this filter was that the gasket never seemed to seal properly and always had a slow drip.

All in all, the car has been great so far. We just did an ATF change last weekend too. He no longer regrets the purchase.

Thanks for the post. I've always wondered how Mann filters are. It looks well constructed with pleats all even with no warpage or tears, etc. I don't like that the seal was not good and had a slow leak. would you use that brand of filter again?

I giggled, because I tell my friends that I know Jenna Jameson, which I do but not the one that most people know. She actually goes by Jen nowadays because of that reason.

Those MANN filters are really stout pieces of equipment. I believe that your dad would have enough room to fit the W940/25 in there instead. It has the same bypass specs and is longer and also has that nice one-way type screw on the end for easy removal. Plus, they are cheaper than the W930/21s at Rock Auto.

I am not sure yet. We will see how this WIX filter and WIX's future quality turns out since they have been bought out by Mann+Hummel.

I didn't realize they were owned by Mann when I bought this filter. To my knowledge, there has been one reported Mann tear here on BITOG. Since it looked like a Purolator tear and not a flawed part, that has me skeptical.

Looks like Mann has mastered the elusive manufacturing problem seen in other filters of spacing the pleats evenly. And they spaced the paper pleats close to the seam like they are supposed to. Not bad! Of course you can't tell how well it filters-filtered from looking at it, but it was probably good enough. Still like Fram Ultras in nearly any application for stoutness and filtering.

You have a real German Mann there, not a Purolator Mann. I know a lot of people give Mann + Hummel a hard time, but I prefer to place the blame a lot closer to the actual defect. Mann filters for European applications are fantastic, and generally cheaper than the competition. As a whole, the German filter lines, when in Canadian stores or online Canadian retailers, are cheaper than Frams, Wix, North American Purolator types, and so forth.

Yet, Purolator has these little issues with their filters, but not their Rotella filters. So, someone is simply being lazy on the job. Clearly, Mann + Hummel and its Purolator operations can make good filters. For some reason, a couple lines are extraordinarily shoddy.

This tells me that someone in QC isn't doing his job. Perhaps even those whole productions lines should just be shut down and outsourced to someone who can do the job.

If Wix gets lazy or shoddy, I'd drop them, too. There are plenty of other options.

Mann part numbers that start with W or HU are real Mann filters, made in Germany (some of the cartridges are made in Spain).

Mann part numbers that start with ML are Purolators.

well, pooop! The Mann filters sold on rockauto all start with ML-, at least for my application.

This Mann filter looks fine. Would seem to indicate Mann knows what it takes to make what looks to be quality piece. Maybe it's just a matter of where they allocate their resources.

Unfortunately using some bitog anecdotes the folks at Puro US haven't seen any leadership from M&H on the QC/QA front yet. One would think if they were serious about it, after almost a decade of ownership they would have it figured out. Must not be a priority.

Then again, seeing as a sealing gasket leak was noted, perhaps they have brought some of that to Puro US.
