I was at AAP today looking for a Mann+Hummel 930/21 and came across this. How long have they been using this feature? Even though it was potentially over-used, the recent K&N failure makes me not a fan of this.. That cap sure looks like a great spot for salt to hide and eat at the spot welds too.

I have no idea if this filter would be a correct fit, but they look to have the same threads and gasket diameter. They did not have the 930/21 on the shelf so I went with a M1-204.

Looks like a better coating than K&N - but the first place those rusted for me was in the heat altered 1" nut metal. Those small serration profiles like some Motorcrafts have work well with a (metal) puller & 3/8" drive ...

After a quick google, this filter does share the same gasket diameter, thread pitch and bypass specs as the 930/21. I really hope this isn't the replacement seeing how they didn't have that filter or a spot on the shelf for it.

That is meant to be used with a slotted screwdriver. I've been using them for years, never seen any rust - but they only stay on the car for 6 months.

I prefer a strap wrench for removal, but I guess it gives another option.

It looks like this is only specked for a Passat? The 930/21 for older VW and Volvo...?

They appear to sell a removal wrench for this flute design.

Is it the reflection or is the slot in the removal nut one way?

The vehicle is a 2004 A4 with the 3.0 V6.

For the 940/25, Mann's site says Audi A4 8D which looks to be years 1994-2001. Zero results come up for the 930/21. AAP, NAPA and RA sell this filter for the 2004.

The fang shape you see is mirrored on both sides. Looks to be only used for removal so that should allow it to hold up I suppose.

Ah you're right I seem to have it backwards:

940/25

930/21

940/25 is a 1.8T filter for 97-05 Audi A4/VW Passat and some Volvo 240 series 1980s diesels. The 930/21 is the filter for the 2.7t/2.8/3.0 30V and some 12V VW/Audi engines and has a different bypass pressure, one is 2.5bar the other is 3.0bar don't remember which is which. It will work on your 3.0 and is probably no more optimum than the Mobil 1 filter you bought.

Those creep me out after seeing a post with a failure where oil leaked out and drained the sump of some time.

Simple is better in such an important location. If I need help there's always a strap wrench or if it's really stuck then there's the big screwdriver and a hammer. The last option is messy but it's a sure thing.
