Five New Hanover Sheriff's deputies have been disciplined after tasing and arresting a man at his father's funeral this past Saturday.

Gladwyn Russ III was wanted on a domestic warrant for a threatening to kill his wife. The plan was for deputies to arrest Russ after the funeral, but a miscommunication at the sheriff's department resulted in two plain clothes detectives taking him in to custody while he was acting as a pallbearer, and sliding his father's casket in to the hearse.

From the New Hanover County Jail, Russ told the story of how sheriff's deputies arrested him at his father's funeral. “I was just in awe. I didn't know what was going on because I was watching my daddy's casket pass through my hands for the last time," he said. >>

Much as I HATE guys who abuse their wives and thnk they should be fed to general pop. in prison, this is tasteless on the part of the police....

Kinda a collision of circumstances here. He was an obvious scofflaw and wasn't going to go easily ..no matter what. Then (one would assume) his father was probably near death or whatever ..which would have made NOT turning himself in understandable otherwise. That left the funeral as a great place to FINALLY grab the guy who just wasn't going to go on his own.

We had a 70 year old retired land owner that had ATV'rs and dirt biker's traversing his property on the way to the abandoned rail road tracks. He'd usually get out there just in time to see them driving off after tearing up his turf. He'd come out with his shotgun to give them the message to stay off of his property. Well, you guessed it, he finally tagged one of the trespassers ..and went to jail.

It looks like an indefensible position until you reason WHY what occurred occurred. Not saying it was necessary ..just I understand why something like that could happen.

If it was a case of mistaken identity or something like that, I might have some sympathy for this guy.
However, the police admitted their mistake openly, and several are being disciplined. Can't ask for much more than that.
