Used Makita vs. new China?

My 12V Makita battery charger died. Opened it up, and saw blown fuse and popped capacitor. Replaced the damaged parts, but the second it's plugged in, the fuse pops, so I think it's done (beyond my ability to fix).

A used Makita brand charger is about the same price as a new China charger (off eBay).

I love my old Makita 12V drill motor, and hate to ditch it. I have other drills, so don't need it per se, but hate to give up.

Got two Makita batteries, one of which isn't overly old, so that's a consideration also.

What would you do?

Just curious, Is thete an appliance repair place close by? If so might be worth a shot. If you have a batteries plus nearby some stores have very knowledgeable staff that might be able to repair it. As a last resort have you tried to contact Makita? They may very well repair it.

Too expensive. Used/China is $25 shipped. No way a repair shop would come close.

I would choose used Makita over new knock off. The 12V are getting hard to support these days...not as bad as my old 9.6V, but not easy...

Regarding 12V Makita support, it's hard to find a decent aftermarket battery these days. A new Makita brand battery costs more than buying a new drill, and most Amazon batteries are pure junk. I went through several new purchases before finding a half way decent aftermarket battery.

Many of these knockoff chargers don't have a very big transformer in them and don't charge worth a nickel. I bought a couple for my old Porter cable and at first I thought it was the knockoff batteries. I ended up running a couple jumper wires from an old Milwaukee 18 volt charger and the batteries now get a full charge. If course to trick the smart charger I have to first put an 18v Milwaukee battery on it then hook up to the Porter cable. If the charger weighs about as much as a sheet of paper its worthless.

Regarding 12V Makita support, it's hard to find a decent aftermarket battery these days. A new Makita brand battery costs more than buying a new drill, and most Amazon batteries are pure junk. I went through several new purchases before finding a half way decent aftermarket battery.

The aftermarket batteries are usually half the advertised amp hours. The only way to get anything out of them is by overcharging them with a big power supply.

Yeah don't go the knock-off route! Just an idea, why not buy a kit (charger&drill) and then sell the drill, there may be someone in a similar situation only the other way around, that way your charger would be a reasonable price.
