A couple walnut shelves for bathroom decor. The challenge was starting with a hunk of slab leftover from a table build

I had to rip the slab in two then plane to 1.25” thick rough and rip to finished depth, cross cut to length

Cleaning the bark off the live edge and finish sanding now

Red Oak? Tough to tell from the pictures and no view of the end grain.

Very cool with lots of character.

Old walnut slab end. I made a printer slab table under my office workbench with the better part. Never knew what I was going to do with the hunk with water stains and nasty bark. The wife wanted some darkish shelves so I almost bought some 3/4 or 1" boards from a hardwood place then I saw this leaning behind my 20T press of all places. Ripped it with the circular saw and a quick jig - as table saw fence rip not possible and ripping with the miter.......hmm, yeah no thanks although one end was squarish

Will mount standard like with 3/4” wide 3x3” brass L brackets. Wife didn't want hidden pocket mount type so easy peasy for me

I'm on 220 grit hand sanding now. Will go 300ish, I don't think I need 400.

Will finish with a hard wax oil, never tried before.

As you can see brackets are NOT 3x3" wife kinda was not holding her head right. That company she ordered does not make 3x3" only 3"x6" inch. She was OK with these though, and she also goobered up and only order 2 (she thought they came in sets of 2). So for the short shelf she changed her mind and wants it else where in the house, but same brackets but inverted, which is fine.
