Make my own silent tyres

Perfect information again. I wish we have talked a few years ago. That would have made everything way more easy for me.

I have asked so many people and specialists and nobody could give me the right answer.

Ow one more thing. The local company where I mount my tyres always tell me that when I mount a bigger rim that there is more risk of having vibrations in the steering wheel. The bigger the wheel the more sensitive it becomes.

What's your opinion on that one?

That's really the last question! ;)
The larger the tire, the more difficult it is to manufacture, so larger rim diameters generally have higher levels of non-uniformity.

I went online looking at several Dunlop NST’s … looks like they are using a pretty slick tread pattern as a key component of “quiet“ … not for me …

What do you exactly mean? Is slick not quiet?

IMO … their patterns are focused more on quiet than anything else - that’s fine on dry pavement … but that’s not all many folks drive on …
So I mean they have made that trade off … and not just a tire liner to get quiet …

Owww I understand! Thats exactly what I am looking for in a tyre. How do you recognise a tread? can you show me an example where to look at?

In general … patterns that cross will make more tread noise … some feel they evacuate water better … but the circumference grooves do that pretty well to start with.

Here is the the Dunlop and a winter tire for example

Allright. Good info.
But how is it possible that this Michelin is quoted as one of the most silent tyres and it still has lots of cross tread?

And before I have had this Pilot super "sport" and this was a TERRIBLE tyre.... I heard the sound of a binging basketball ALL the time!!! Even on a pretty straight nice road..... I lost lots of money on that set.... When they tried to sell me the Dunlop sportmax with NST (foam) I almost got an anxiety attack because of the word "sport" written on that tyre!

How is it possible that this Supersport is so loud with less thread?

no not at all. Slicks are very noisy. But uniform sized thread blocks, especially on the outer rib are noisy aswell
I never knew this! I thought. No ribs, no sound but it seems to be the opposite.

Do you mean with uniform, a straigh line or stripe? Because both of the Michelins above have a line but the Primacy is a bit curved and the Supersport is more straight.

primacy changes the width of the thread blocks so the noise cancels out, it reduces the humming you get from the thread. The dunlop does that too

Hello my friends,

Normally I am driving on 245-45-18 Dunlop with NST (Noise shield technology)
These tyres are extremely silent because they have a layer of foam sticked in the inside of the tyre on the part of the thread.

Since I can't mount these tyres anymore because I have found my ultra rare Japanese dream rims which are way wider then original I am planning to mount. It will be 215-50-18 in the front and 225-50-18 in the rear.

I am confused you say the new wheels are WIDER, but yet you are mounting NARROWER tires on them?
so
you using 245/45r18 on normal wheels

much wider wheels 215/50r18??

I think you have issues doing this.

Is that also the reason why my beloved Michelin Alpin 5 tyres are so silent??

I love these tryes so much. I have them on another Lexus in 225-55-16 but next set ill be taking 225-65-16 for even more comfort.

Hahahah I understand your reaction when I see your profile picture!

Not at all. Serious question. If the wider tires wont fit wider wheels.. how would narrower tires fit wider wheels?
Perhaps including the size(width) of the old and new wheels and their backspacing or offset.. would be relevant to this thread?

Wider wheel is chance on rubbing the fender. I try to avoid that. I need the maximum width of wheel to get a dish as deep as possible.

The deeper the dish the better is looks. The stretched tyres also look beautiful in my opinion. Once I have had an oldtimer with 195 on a 9j rim in 14 inch. Best look I've ever had.

I know someone with the same car as me and this is a picture of it. I am aiming for this look. Now you can see exactly why wide tyres wont fit. He has 225-40-18 but I need my comfort so I am planning for a 50 hight instead of 40.

My wheels will not exactly be that wide since I have 9.5 in the rear with et12 and he has 10.5 with et0.

PS "The deeper the dish the better the look" that is in the eye of beholder.

Well there are limits ofcourse.
The picture above doesnt have any tyre rubbing. He had in the beginning but he rolled the fenders a little bit.
