Just thought of this question during my drive home today: Which major brands of oil have you NEVER used? And why?

For me

1) Pennzoil
2) Castrol

Why? Nothing against these two brands, but they have never been on sale when I needed oil. I have used just about every other major brand.

Last edited:
Pennzoil
Mobil (Exxon SuperFlo as well)
Quaker State
Royal Purple, at AutoZone (Likely never will)
Lubro Moly (Major Oil brand?)
MotorCraft
NAPA
Lucas (never seen except for Smake Oil)
AMSOIL (Major Brand, Direct Buy only?)
Texaco. (Havoline Supreme)

Have ueed:
Valvoline
Castrol

Major brands that are available over the counter and at gas stations that I never used:
Citgo(regardless of price), Royal Purple(too expensive for what it is) and MotorCraft(rarely on sale).

Have used:

Pennzoil
Valvoline
Exxon Super Flo
Mobil 1
Castrol
Royal Purple

As to which I have not used, too many to list.

Mostly the "speciality" ones...Amsoil, RL, RP, Motul...

Lately it's been mostly SOPUS and Mobil, with some Ashland sprinkled in....

Have used:

Motorcraft (currently using 10w30)
Castrol High Mileage
Peak Motor Oil
Supertech Full Synthetic

Never used, Don't intend on using, or would like to try in the near future:

Pennzoil (will try)
Amsoil (not happening)
Royal Purple (forget it)
Mobil 1 or Mobil Clean 5000 (might try real soon)
Citgo (not happening)
All Conoco Phillips Products (used occasionally from time to time)
Valvoline (might try)
Quakerstate (will try)
Chevron (will try)
Exxon (might try)
Shell Formula and Rotella T (will try)
Castrol (never again)
Havoline (might try)

Not counting the Amsoil ATF in my transmission, I've never used any boutique oils.

Store bought on the other hand I think I've used most.

Valvo
Pennzoil
Shell
Castrol
Quaker State
Exxon (poured one quart through the engine to 'rinse' the old oil. I was dumb then)
Mobil
Havoline
Motorcraft
Peak (not sure if it's a major brand)

Kind of all that I can think of right now. I guess with three cars, I get to experiment every few months.

I have used:

Valvoline
Valvoline MaxLife
Castrol GTX
Castrol GTX HM
Castrol Synblend
Mobil Clean 5000
Supertec (beater that I sold)
Formula Shell (cheap)

I worked at the local lube shop and heard the horror stories abot Pennzoil so I swore I would never use it. Sounds like that was a bunch of [censored]... Almost bought it this time.

I have used Castrol GTX, Pennzoil, Quaker State, Valvoline, Cheveron, Trop Artic, Mobil Clean Mobil 1, Valvoline Synpower, Various Pennzoil syn's.

I have used( and even sold a lot of them ), at one time or another, all of the well known oils in synthetic and conventional varieties( includes boutique brands ). Even Amsoil which I am sure will surprise some folks here based on what I generally say about them.

I haven't used every oil out there but again most of the basic well known/name brand ones.

I couldn't possibly think of all the brand names I haven't used.
But, in no particular order, I have used--or soon will use from the oil stash:

Amsoil (ASL)
Pennzoil (YB and PP)
Castrol (GTX and Syntec)
Valvoline (WB, Maxlife, and Synpower)
Kendall (GT-1 conventional)
Quaker State (conventional)
Havoline (conventional)
Mobil 1
STP (conventional)
UniLab (conventional, API SF)
Royal Purple
Trop Artic (conventional)
O'Reilly's (conventional)
NAPA (conventional)

I've always used conventionals, but off the top of my head I've never used a fill of:

Esso/EOM (was 'Esso Protec', now 'Mobil Super 1000')
Valvoline
Any Conoco-Phillips oil (Kendall GT-1 here)
