Major flaw with PureONE Gold filter (tight-grip)

Sounds like you left residual gasket debris on the oil filter mounting plate. That's the only thing I know of that would cause a filter leak. Always inspect the old oil filter gasket to make sure that none of remains on the mount. Then inspect the mount to make sure it is clean of debris.

I will check today. I am going to a dealer and getting one of their filters. I will inspect it carefully. I had a chevy engine once that had a small nick in that surface that caused a leak. To stop that leak I applied axle grease @each oil change. I would not want to do that on the subaru because it tends to "glue" the filter on. This filter can be very difficult when too tight as I found when I took the original one off, the factory had made it crazy tight.

This is what I'd recommend as well. Roughly the same price.

It has 2,300 since the last oil change. The subaru black filters never had issue, but then subaru discontinued them and went to the blue filters that leaked a little bit. Because the blue leaked I decided to try a non-factory brand filter and bought a PureOne. It really leaks. I tried to tighten it more two times now and it won't budge.
Some Suby owners here have reported (search)that non OEM filters (including the P1) with flat gaskets do tend to weep from the gasket area. IIRC, the OEM Suby designed gasket is a P type design.

After seeing where the oil filter is located on a Suby, I have wondered if the heat from the exhaust is a factor in the use of non OEM filters with flat gaskets.

I have never had a leaking issue using any aftermarket oil filter (including the orange can) with flat gaskets. In fact the only filter where the gasket leaked was a dealer installed Denso with P type gasket on a Tacoma.

That said, perhaps Suby's OEM filter gaskets work better then some aftermarket filters.

The filter mounting surface has some sort of contaminant on it. It looks like rust but this thing is aluminum. I am trying to clean w/o scratching.

+1 I currently have 3 PL14610 in my stash purchased from AAP in the last year or two, no "flakes" in any box. All the filters come thread end down in the box so I'm not sure how all the flakes fall off right into the filter. I've never had that issue, nor would I know how they would fall "right into the filter" even if they did fall off.

In early production of the P1, there was some overspray issues. One BITOG poster emailed Puro and they sent replacements.

I like the texture for ease of hand tight installation.

Simple solution, don't like em switch brands. Thanks for the tip, but I'll continue to use the P1 with confidence.

But it is true, that this has been discussed ad nauseam. Perhaps the "flakes" aren't just about the texture.

You might be thinking about me. I bought a bunch from Amazon.com just as they made the change over from the Blue filter to the Puke colored ones. I saw some slight overspray, and emailed Purolator, they collected the filters in question and sent replacements w/o hesitation. The replacments were fine.

I just bought one for my E-150, I opened the box in the store and it checked out fine. It is possible there are still some of the early puke filters floating around. Just last week in Pep Boys I saw a few of the Blue Filters so it could just be a problem of poor stock rotation, and some older ones still in the system.

If you have any concerns contact Purolator they are very easy to deal with.

Tried to clean w/rubber eraser, no good. Then used steel wool and got it way better. Washed out w/ carb. cleaner, then WD-40, then compressed air, and toweled it one more time. I filled the new filter w/slick 50, but used 90wt. gear oil on the gasket.

What? Were you out of battery acid?

That's proven effective in removing stubborn unwanted deposits from surfaces.

If it's all that hard to dislodge manually w/agents, I wonder how it holds up to an OCI?

Yes, sulfuric acid has long been one of my favorite cleaning agents. Yeahhhh, that's the ticket.

Just got a Purolator Pure One Gold Filter--it's the one with the yellow-tight-grip paint.

The problem is that FLAKES of this paint usually falls off the outer casing of the filter and right into the filter and when installed it mixes with oil and goes right into your engine.

i confirmed this today! i opened a p1 box and looked at the section in side the gasket surface and saw a very fine sand/paint residue. i suppose it could be cleaned out quickly but i wouldn't trust that it was all gone, and i'd by pretty ticked off if i had to clean the sand out of a new filter before i install it. i know it was said that it can be cleaned out and most of it will get filtered out as soon as oil pressure comes up, but if this was a fram filter everyone would be claiming it as even more proof that fram filters will destroy your engine.

ain-it da twooth, baby...ain-it da twooth...

Contact Purolator and ask nicely for some replacements, AND express your displeasure at having to go thru this hassle. When you see a problem, SPEAK UP to the manufacturer and hopefully they will tighten their QC. As great as BITOG is, none of us are on the boards at the major filter companies. If you continue to have this issue consider your options, switch to a more expensive and /or inferior filter or deal with the dust. I use P1's exclusively and have never had a problem with 'fairy dust'. It doesn't mean I won't in the future, but if I do, I will call Purolator and inform them of my dissatisfaction with their product. I'll then have to make the same decision, either deal with the dust, or go elsewhere for my filter needs.

mareakin, what filter # was the one you found this problem on? the one i noticed it on was a 20195, i checked another filter # and it was clean, wondering if it a problem with a specific prodution line.

The one thing i would like to see change on the P1, actually on all Purolator is how thin the gasket is. Every other brand of filter I've used, the gasket is much more thick. It make not make any difference but I rather have a thicker gasket.

I've seen it on every Pure One filter I've opened, and it's impossible to get all the residue out.

Stupid design if you ask me. They should have copied the material Fram uses for their "anti slip" coating. There isn't an adhesive in the world that is going to catch all those annoying gold flakes.

Congratulations! You win the OCD award for this week of June 2010

and coming from us, that's a stupendous achievement

I'd be afraid to use steel wool anywhere near the mounting area of an oil filter. Steel wool getting into the filter is far worse then a few paint flecks.

I used to use them at every OCI. Because of that gold [censored], I'll only buy them if they're included in a killer 5 quart deal. Purolator really needs to rethink their strategy.
