I am looking for magnetic drain plugs to replace the stock ones on the oil pans of my Ram and Escape (and eventually on my Ram's transmission pan once I get around to installing one). I noticed there are a couple different brands out there that claim to be the strongest, made of the best magnets, etc. Has anyone found that one brand is really better than another, or are they all pretty much on the same playing field?

I have also seen the filter mags, but I'm really not as interested in those.

The ones I've used in the past have come from a parts house, and all of them have worked equally as well as the other. I wouldn't order an expensive or "special" one as i don't believe there really is such a thing in terms of a drain plug. I don't think that the lifespan of and engine with a filter is effected much if at all by having a magnet drain plug.

a transmission is different. Auto transmissions have a magnet inside the pan. most manuals also have a magnetic drain plug as well. A transmission unlike an engine does not get its oil and filter changed every 5k miles or so either.

I have been getting a BG transmission service every 30k miles since I have owned the vehicle. Now that the mileage is getting up there, I dont see the need anymore. Im going to drill out and install a drain plug so I can do simple drains and refills on the tranny from now on. Some of the ones from the partshouses I have seen have been pretty weak. I was hoping to find some magnet that was a tad on the stronger side.

I have 'magnetic drain plugs' on my Transmission & Differential
I had a hex nut welded to exterior of both covers.
Then drilled thru cover and installed plug. Works good.

I went to Auto Zone and their Mag. Plug would barely pick up a large paper clip (seriously).

I ended up buying from: http://goldplug.com/ Made in USA
Edit: The (small) magnetic would pick up an 8" adjustable wrench.

Above post showing MagneticDrainPlug seem to be of same quality.

OP and others:

Get the "Dimple" brand drain plugs. They are absolutely phenomenal. I've used them on several cars. The power of the Dimple magnets is amazing. Super high quality threads, etc.

I went to Baxter and bought a Dorman for less than $7. Picks up the big wrenches, more than powerful enough.

Gold Plugs look good but: They don't make one for my Ford, so I will have to have them special order one? And how often do you need to replace the washer on the drain plug? I notice they sell inexpensive replacement washers, so am I to understand they should be replaced with each oil change?

I have used Dorman and I have used Gold Plug.

The Dorman plugs I used didn't have nearly as much magnetism as the Gold plug. Also, it appears that the Gold plug is made of a better grade of steel than the Dorman.

As for the website not mentioning what part your car takes, if you can find out what thread size your OEM plug has, you can order a new plug with the same thread. That is what I have done in all situations where I used a magnetic plug.

I find that the autopart store magnets work great. But, they don't have every size in stock. I also have no problem with ebay magnetic drainplugs.

I did place an order with CGenterprises that never shipped.

Just got the drain plug today in the mail. Regular post which was great, the mailman put it in my tiny apartment style mailbox so I didn't have to pick it up at some far away depot.

All I have to say is the magnet is unbelievably strong. Comes with one beefy Aluminum washer that looks like you can use a few times.

Nice cardboard bubble package for the AP08 size I ordered.

Will install this in the Spring, as I just changed the oil not too long ago.

That's the only way to be sure, unless you can buy one locally.
